Aggie fans had to wait it out a little bit as he got his paperwork in order, but Dekaney’s Trey Williams officially joined Aggie Football today by signing his letter-of-intent to Texas A&M. Afterward, he talked about the emotions of signing day.
“It feels great, I’m excited and ready to go,” he said. “I’m training this summer so I’m just getting ready for the next level and to take this team to a national championship.”
While he’s on board with A&M now, it wasn’t completely smooth sailing since he committed at last year’s spring game. When Mike Sherman was fired in December, it wasn’t a sure thing that Williams would find his way to Aggieland.
“At the time when they fired Coach Sherman I was disappointed by that, Coach Sherman is a great guy,” said Williams. “But I took my official and talked to Coach Sumlin and Coach McKinney, and he’s a great guy also. I talked it up with them and I had a great time there and I talked to the recruits and everything. DeVante (Harris), Matt (Davis) and all of those guys. It’s a great group of guys and we’re looking to make a change, I’m excited.”
In fact, it wasn’t until a visit to another school that Williams said he knew for sure that A&M was the place for him.
“I was at Arkansas, I had a great time up there as well, but I was feeling A&M in my heart. I had A&M on my mind the whole time and I was sitting there like ‘that’s where home is.’” he said.
Even though the class had some changes in the closing days with the loss of Bralon Addison and Corey Thompson, Williams said that the class that he’s coming in with is going to be a special one.

“It definitely hurt,” he said. “I wish we could have had Bralon and Corey on the ‘AggSwaggMovement’ as well, but their decision is there decision, you can’t control what people think or what they’re going to do. But ‘AggSwagg’ is a family thing. We’re just trying to build a tradition and do something new and less this be a classic moment.”
Williams, who rolled up over 3,800 yards rushing in his senior season, said that he knows he’s going to have to work hard at A&M, but he’s hoping to contribute right away.
“It’s a great group of running backs, and I know I’m going to have to work. They’re great guys, I’ve talked to them, and I’m looking forward to learning from them as well and getting better and working for the team,” he said.
He added, “It’s just putting the fire in the gut and adding on to this offense they have. I plan on doing a lot and producing for that offense that (Kevin Sumlin’s) running. It’s going to be new, it’s definitely going to be challenge for me but I can’t wait.”
Never lacking for confidence, Williams laid out his goals in Aggieland.
“Just win a national championship and getting that Heisman Trophy,” he said. “I want to be the freshman of the year in the SEC. I’m trying to get that, I’m ready for it, I’m hungry for it.”
As for the rest of his class, Williams said that the SEC isn’t prepared for what’s headed their way in 2012.
“The SEC doesn’t know what’s coming. They don’t know about Texas. We’ve got a lot coming, and it’s a great group of guys we have committed. Like I said, we’re looking to make a change, we’re looking to do something new for this whole school. I’m fired up, I can’t even explain how ready I am. Gig ‘Em.”
