GigEm247 has confirmed with multiple sources that Texas A&M co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach Marcel Yates will be heading to Boise State next season to serve as the Broncos’ defensive coordinator.
Yates, who has been an assistant for two years on head coach Kevin Sumlin’s staff, came to College Station from Boise State where he coached defensive backs for nine seasons from 2003 through 2011.
Yates will be reunited with new Bronco head coach Bryan Harsin, who was the offensive coordinator for Boise State from 2006 through 2010 before stints as offensive coordinator at Texas and head coach at Arkansas State.
The Los Angeles native, who also was an assistant at Montana State in 2001 and 2002, will be returning home of sorts as he played defensive back at Boise State from 1996 to 1999.
Yates has already informed Sumlin of his departure. Texas A&M will need to fill the void at secondary coach and GigEm247 has learned that interviews for the position will happen relatively quickly, likely as soon as Monday.
