- First, this was another incredibly gritty performance by A&M. Again without Dash Harris they were able to manufacture offense against a team that they really shouldn’t have been able to. Before I get to nit picky about the game I wanted to go ahead and get that out of the way. Obviously the effort was huge, and anyone who was doubting Kennedy’s ability to motivate this team should have those questions answered. The question now going forward is can A&M win games. Moral victories are one thing against Kansas and Baylor, but now it’s time for Kennedy to prove they can win some games.
- For a second straight game I thought the opposing coach made a huge tactical error for most of the game, and it was the same error. I don’t know how you could watch the game film from A&M against Oklahoma State and choose to sit back in a zone. A&M had just seven turnovers in this game, and that’s without anyone on the court who can really handle the ball well. (Five of those turnovers came from Elston Turner, who most would agree is the best available ball handler.)
- Daniel Alexander is becoming a legitimate player for A&M. People forget that he’s a redshirt freshman, but he’s really coming into his own. He has the confidence to knock down shots, and he’s learned what it takes to get in there and rebound. Alexander played an incredible 35 productive minutes tonight. He stayed out of foul trouble, hit some big shots, handled the ball well, and rebounded well. To that end I also thought Ray Turner grew up a lot tonight. The Aggies needed him to show up in this game, and he finally did. Hopefully it’s a springboard to more consistent performances for him.
- Perhaps the most encouraging thing about this game is that A&M very well could have won it without Elston Turner shooting the ball well. That last possession aside, in which I think he overthought the situation, he did all he could do to manage the offense and run the team, but for him to be at his best he needs shots to fall and tonight simply wasn’t his night.
- Naji Hibbert might have played his best game as an Aggie tonight. Why do I say that? Because despite not hitting shots, he was able to dish out four assists (and not turn the ball over.) He also did a great job of controlling the game tempo for most of the second half. Hibbert has historically been a guy who plays as well as his jump shot, but tonight he showed some maturity on the court.
The simple bottom line though is that right now A&M just doesn’t have the horses to close out these kind of games. Elston Turner played 37 minutes tonight and Daniel Alexander played 35. They need guys to get healthy not only because of their talent, but to rest the guys they have now. A&M is going to face an extremely tough test on Saturday in Manhattan from a team that will certainly be running a man-to-man defense. If Harris is still out, it might be a tougher challenge than Baylor as a result.
