#3 A&M vs UT-Arlington Thread (3-2 UT-A Bottom 9)

  • The #3 Aggies (I'm just going to roll with the USA Today poll) are back in action today against UT-Arlingon. UT-A has wins this season over Baylor, Texas and Oklahoma so they know what they're doing. Those wins against Texas and Oklahoma were both on the road as well. So there's that.

    For the Mavericks

    11 - SS - Ryan Walker
    25 - 1B - Jordan Vaughn
5 - RF - Preston Beck (Has an incredible 44 RBI on the season with 8 HRs)
    23 - 2B - Michael Guerra
    38 - LF - Preston Morrow
    17 - DH - Matt Shortall
    15 - C - Greg McCall
    2 - CF - Jake Pinchback
    37 - 3B - Brent Bollinger

On the mound tonight for the Mavericks is first time starter Adam Westbrook. He has 15 appearances on the year, but has pitched just 12 innings. He's given up just one earned run on 12 hits for a .075 ERA. Opponents are batting .261 against Westbrook.

    For the Aggies...

For the Aggies, if it aint broke, don't fix it...

    Mikey Reynolds
    Krey Bratsen
    Tyler Naquin
    Jacob House
    Matt Juengel
    Brandon Wood
    Troy Stein
    Blake Allemand
    Scott Arthur

On the mound is Gandy Stubblefield who has yet to factor in a decision in his two starts. He has a 2.81 ERA on the season, but opponents are batting just .222 against the righty. He's thrown 16 innings this season in 7 appearances.

  • It's a unassisted out at first to start the game. After a UT-A hit the Aggies retire the next two.

  • Westbrook having some trouble finding the strike zone. Walks Reynolds and Bratsen. But then gets bailed out by an absolutely odd play.

The left fielder came running in on a short pop up by Naquin. The Aggies had a hit and run on, so Reynolds and Bratsen were both almost to second and third base respectively. Then it looked like the fielder caught it, so both started retreating to second and first. However, the fielder dropped it, and the umpire ruled it fair, so the left fielder threw it in to second. The second basemen tagged Reynolds retreating to second, and then tagged second for the force out on Bratsen.

Absolutely bizarre, but the correct call I think.

    Not unless Bratsen passed Reynolds.

Was Reynolds on second and Bratsen on first?

  • Yeah, I worded that weird, that's my fault.

The play itself wasn't that complicated or anything, but it was weird how it unfolded, it looked like the left fielder definitely had it.

So one runner passed up the other one?

  • The only way it's a force out is if the runner on first passed second base.

  • No, they were out because the second basemen tagged Reynolds and got the force out on Bratsen.

And Wood just hammered one to left center for a solo shot, 1-0 Aggies.

  • What?

Also, Troy Stein just hit a laser shot off the left field wall for a double.

  • Some more drama in the inning with the double and the hit batter, but the Wood homer is it for the Aggies in the second. However, the Aggies will be back to the top of the order in the 3rd.

In order for the second baseman to step on the bag for a force out, the runner on first would have had to pass the runner on second.

  • No he doesn't, because the left fielder dropped the ball, it's a force out at second...

  • Nothing doing for the Mavericks in the top of the third.

Bratsen leads off the third with a hit.

  • A fly ball from Naquin moves Bratsen to third, but House and Juengel can't get him home. Still 1-0 into the fourth.

Not if the runner from first crossed second base.

Once the runner from second leaves the bag, as long as he gets tagged beyond the bag, the runner from first has every right to that bag without a force out.

  • You know that because he dropped it that the actual batter is in play right? He can't retreat to first...

Where was the runner that was on second base tagged? Was he beyond second base? If so, the batter has the right to first, and the runner from first has the right to second base. What am I missing Aubs?

  • He was tagged by the shortstop, I'm not sure how you're not getting this...

The Mavericks are working here in the fourth though. Bases jacked with no outs and a hit brings one in for UT-A. Bases still loaded with no outs.

  • A sac fly to left is going to bring in another one. 2-1 Mavericks in the fourth.
