ACC TV deal even worse than I thought

  • And yet you're long Clemson.

    Fascinating as usual.

  • Clemson delivers the Greenville market...

Good school but small in a sparsely populated state.

v-Tech gets you the premium you need for the third tier rights. It's not even a comparison with Clemson on that front (and I like Clemson).

Expansion is driven around adding new markets for the third tier network.....

Clemson is us due to having an insanely passionate fanbase les by retarded admin and a mediocre team who gets killed on the national stage. They have just as much if not more potential than we do

VT does not have a good fanbase and brings very little money

Where as Clemson is the exact opposite. They are a SEC fanbase stuck in the ACC. They have a better basketball and baseball programs than VT also.

And neither FSU or Clemson are going to the SEC

These are great points about Clemson, but they are further down the list when the SEC is deciding to add them to our conference (BTW--I just lived typing that: "our conference").

#1 question: Does Clemson add population/TV subscriptions to the SEC? (no)
#2 question: Would they be voted in? (no)

I get that Clemson is a great academic school with a really good fan base, and that culturally they would be fine in the SEC. I just don't think it ever gets past those two questions.

The true test of a man's intelligence is how much he agrees with you.

  • For sec expansion you want to add the smaller school in a SEC state and at best the 4th most popular College team in ATL.

I love Clemson and enjoy the area. With that said, the SEC already dominates the area with UGA and S.Car close..

You discount vtech in it's own state ( N. Virginia burbs) but use Atlanta as a baseline argument?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you're talking about national cable companies or satallite providers, it's not the city, but the state that is ranked. This is how the B1G Network is charging folks. Doesn't matter if you're in Dearborn or Detroit, everyone in the state of Michigan that gets the B1G Network pays the same. States matter, cities don't. That's why we were so important to the SEC. The SEC Network will be able to charge the entire state of Texas--even those pricks in Austin and Waco.

Clemson doesn't add marketshare in that fashion. Neither does FSU. VaTech and NCState add a healthy number of subscriptions.

  • Clemson would have been our partner last year but they have the same problem FSU has

The SEC already has that state and even if the SEC wanted them you would have USCe, UF, UGA, and probably UT all blocking them (probably Bama too)

You know why? Because they all compete with Clemson (and FSU) in the Georgia/Florida area and they dont want them to get the SEC card

The SEC knows it would be a wasted effort to even recruit them

WVU, TCU, FSU, and Clemson would be an overall upgrade from Nebraska, CU, Mizzou, and us

  • Though it's already been addressed, Clemson delivers 0% more of the Atlanta market than the SEC already has in Georgia. VT does, in fact, deliver the DC market. That's why they're always discussed as delivering the DC market in conference realignment articles.

Not to even mention that since joining in 2004, VT has won the ACC 4 times, while Clemson has won it once in the last 20 years.

Clemson is basically Texas A&M in a much smaller state with a smaller following and no substantial TV markets. Awesome stadium and gameday experience, everything else is nothing to really talk about.

It gets really hard to have a discussion with you when your response is always that if someone disagrees with you they're idiots.

I'm not sure what "has more money" means. Athletic department budgets? Last year, Mr. SEC.com put together a ranking of athletic department rankings for expansion candidates. Yes, Clemson had the larger budget, but there's really not much difference. By the way, if you'd like to look at the whole series they did on expansion candidates Google "mrsec expansion by the numbers". It makes for interesting reading.

"Better fans"? Again, what is the metric? Football attendance? Yes, Clemson ranked #17 in football attendance and VaTech ranked #23. But in fairness, VaTech ran at 100 percent capacity while Clemson was at 95 percent. The "better basketball" at Clemson and lower attendance than VaTech, by the way.

There are actually many similarities between the A&M and both the other two schools. All three have historic military training roots and a focus on engineering. All three compete with another flagship university in their state. And all three are conservative by nature.

Personally, I enjoyed visiting Clemson and it's an easier trip for me, plus I have friends with family in the area. But from a "better addition to the SEC" perspective, there's very little comparison. Both schools are similar in their national appeal, but it's undeniable that VaTech offers new markets.

As for the DC market, I lived there for six years. By and large, it's simply an NFL town and most people are from somewhere else. But if you had to pick a school with the largest football following, it would be VaTech in my opinion. Keep in mind that DC the city is relatively small compared to the suburbs, which consist of several Northern Virginia counties and the Maryland counties of Montgomery (Bethesda) and Prince Georges (College Park). Frankly, at least when I lived there in the 90s, nobody from Maryland gave a damn about college football. I literally don't even remember hearing a word about the Terrapins and football. But you did have the Hokies as the dominant fanbase in Northern Virginia.

But just forget the whole "who delivers DC market" out of the equation and your left with the fact that Virginia has nearly double the number of residents as South Carolina. That's just a hard figure not to appreciate.

  • Pimp slapped politely.

  • In Slive's perfect world, he'd land UNC and UVA...put them in the East and move Mizzou back into the West.

UNC and UVA are the flagship institutions in "new South" states with expanding populations. Both are premier public universities. They would expand the geographic footprint of the SEC. Finally, taking those two marquee schools would weaken the ACC relative to the SEC, which would be a positive for the SEC for obvious reasons.

Having said all of that, UNC and UVA are probably locked into the ACC and would have political trouble moving away from the ACC...unless the ACC were to disintegrate, which I think is unlikely at this point. Can't see ESPN allowing that to happen -- they'd prefer to just increase the payout to mollify any unhappy schools (i.e. FSU).
