Just work hard at it. It's great for the top 25% or so of the class (made that number up but you get the point), still pretty good for those in the middle, and sucks for the lower ones. At least that's what I've heard

Law school is the best thing I ever did. I worked at 2 top 30 international law firms for 6 years. Now, I own my own business unrelated to law and only practice law when something is referred to me that interest me. But, my legal education helps me almost every day of my life in some way.

If you go to a good school, it is a LOT of work. I watched a lot of really bright engineers get their clocks cleaned in law school. Law school yields what you put into it. I worked hard. Did well, and got a lot out of it.

This is spot on. Law school is 90% effort. There is a direct correlation between effort and return on investment. This applies regardless of law school (other than the extreme best and extreme worst). If you are willing to put in the work, that it can and probably will be worth it. If you are just looking to get in there and believe that doors will open for you immediately, then you are making a VERY poor decision. You'll end up with six-figure debt and hating everyone that ever told you to go to law school. Not to mention hating your job (lawyers have the highest depression rate among professionals).

On the other hand, if you get in there and graduate in the highest group, you'll have your pick of offers and then the ball is in your court and the investment will likely have been a very good one.

Lastly, there are those with parents or family friends that own law firms or are highly-respected attorneys/judges. Generally, it is always a good idea for them to go to law school since the opportunity will be much greater for that individual.

Background - My wife and I went to a highly rated law school, my brother went to a very lowly rated law school. My experience and advice is based on the success and struggles of ourselves as well as our close colleagues and classmates.

Thanks guys. I'm starting school this fall and I'm not really sure with what I want to do. Always thought about being a lawyer but I've heard that its really an over used degree and the payout isn't that great.

Dr Pepper, weren't you asking about engineering too? If so, combine the two and be a patent lawyer. They're always looking for more and patent lawyers make TONS of money. Just get an engr undergrad and head to law school from there

They make more money than all the other lawyers from what I hear. It can just be kind of boring because you're looking at patents instead of people
