Art Briles: Dumbest Coach in the State of Texas

  • From the Dallas Morning News today:

Baylor's Art Briles: 'You lose two teams in Texas A&M and Missouri who never won a Big 12 Championship'

    2:26 PM on Tue., Jun. 19, 2012

Texas A&M leaves the Big 12 for the SEC with Missouri in what some would call a breaking of tradition or bailing on a regionally correct conference.

The Aggies and Tigers felt the stability and the fit for their schools in the SEC was more valued than traditions they held in the Big 12.

Last week Big 12 school Baylor held a mini camp for potential recruits in East Texas where head coach Art Briles was asked several questions about 2011, Robert Griffin III and the state of the Big 12.

Tyler Clifton of the Marshall News Messenger asked Briles in his last question of a Q&A, "How do you see the new-look Big 12 turning out in 2012 with two new league members?"

Briles responded by saying he thinks most folks would be surprised by the balance the Big 12 will now possess.

"It's certainly a talented group to be a part of and is the strongest conference in the country," Briles said. "You lose two teams in Texas A&M and Missouri who never won a Big 12 Championship and gain a pair of teams in TCU and West Virginia who have won BCS games in the last two years. It's exciting."

Though A&M and Missouri may not have contributed as much as they would've preferred, they certainly weren't as bad as Briles makes it seem.

A&M did win a Big 12 Championship in 1999 as the Aggies defeated Kansas State in double overtime. The game is arguably the most thrilling Big 12 Championship in the history of the game.

A&M appeared in the championship game in 1998 but got shellacked by Nebraska 54-15. Missouri made the game twice losing both times to Oklahoma in consecutive seasons, 2007 and '08.

Briles' statement may be a slipped thought but it appears he is ready to rid the A&M-Missouri era of the Big 12 from his memory bank.

  • He's an idiot imo. I thought it was '98 when we won!

  • of course he wants to forget how we kicked the sh*t out of their heisman winner not to mention dominated them the entire time we were in the big 12, what a tool.

  • He is a dumb ass hick. Have you ever closely listened to him speak? He sounds like he should be shoveling shit out of a barn somewhere for a living.

It's going to be fun watching him struggle the next few years.

    Tell U Something Good

  • I'm sure he is excited about playing TCU instead of us. He beat them last year, while getting steamrolled every year by us. Guess he forgets 2-23 record the last 25 years vs. A&M.

He is kind of pathetic really. Sad thing is, that he is the best Baylor can do.

  • Art Briles is an ass and an arrogant prick, but he is not dumb. He knows damn good and well A&M has won the Big 12, he new exactly what he was saying and he will say it to whoever will listen. He knows that the chances of having to retract that statement is slim.

I know for a fact he is aware of A&M winning a BIg 12 title, I have talked to him about the very subject.

    507A

  • It is his own team that has never won a Big 12 title, or even a division title. What a prick.

    buttonhere

  • How about the fact that Baylor never contributed one dime to the Big 12 until the 2010 season when they actually made it to a bowl game. Baylor is a parasite on the back of the Conference.

  • He's selling his program. You dudes will get bent out of shape about anything.

He knows damn well A&M won the Big 12 but he also knows damn well the majority of the country doesn't remember it and won't care to fact check him.

All we need to worry about is the SEC. Who gives a damn about Art Briles and Baylor?

  • I don't even care about his comments but the, "leaving the regional conference", sh*t is just dumb.

So LSU, Ark, Ole Miss, MSU, Bama, isn't our "region", no more or less than Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee & Vandy not being Florida's "region"

College Station, Houston, East & SouthEast Texas is the south, the real deal Holyfield south, I don't care how people try to spin it, it's part of Texas & it's as unquestionably the south as much as north Florida is. People can argue D/FW, Austin, San Antonio & West Texas is not (even tho all of Texas really is) but there is no denying ETX/HTown/CS is the south & we are going to a southern conference.

At least our conference has geographical congruency, although big it still has congruency unlike West Virginia & the rest of the Big12.

  • So Briles didn't remember our Big XII championship game in 1998 when a kid he coached(Branndon Stewart) was our starting QB?

    That is beyond hilarious.

    AggieGrad98

  • Sorry, I had to post again. I am honestly beside myself that he didn't watch/remember that game.

    AggieGrad98

  • He did. He's still pissed off because he thinks Sherman ran the score up on him, and winning this year's game was super, ultra important to him from a "pleasing the money guys" perspective.

He got his ass kicked both on the field and back in Waco.

    cameron00

  • Art's ass is still smarting from the second half of the 2010 game in Waco.

  • Art is a good coach, if recruits want to play against big12 competition, they'd be better off in waco than austin right now. The comments are stretched, he's obviously been butt hurt since the 4th quarter spanking of his Heisman.

    Charlie,
You think? Remember his reaction to Griffin getting asked a question about his (RG3) conversation with Sherman? I can't think of a coach that hates A&M more than Briles.

Bothered Baylor Bear Coach Briles Blows Up...

This video is brought to you by Stephen Rhodes, reporter for Chip Howard SportsTalk. Baylor Bear Head Coach Art Briles rudely interrupts Eagle Writer/Reporter, Larry Bowen, and refuses to let his QB, Robert Griffin the 3rd, answer a simple question. • Sherman wanted blood on that day, he game planned for it and executed, oh if only he wanted it every Saturday.

We share much of the same part of the state, in regards to land as they do, we're a better athletic program than tu and baylor of recent right now, why not take a shot at us, we're top dogs in the state right now

    CoachCharlie

  • Not sure we're top dogs record-wise haha. I agree there's more excitement around our program about SEC, etc, but 7-5 isn't anything to hang our hats on.

He's just trying to counter-act the "play in the league of champions and stay in Texas to do it" argument. This is the most excitement that has been around the bear's program since... ever. If kansas/nebraska/colorado/iowa/west virginia now is the "regional conference" then so is the SEC. Way more exciting opponents. I'd imagine there's a lot of football fan impotence with schedules like that.

Maybe posting's just not your game. I know, let's have a spelling contest.

  • Sherman didn't want blood on any game. The coach he really hated was gundy. Sherman's favorite quote was "never get too high, never get too low." He played every game the same. He didnt try to run up the score against baylor. We ran the ball every single play when we were up on that drive briles got pissed about because sherm didn't want to run the score up. Problem was they couldn't stop our run either

I think you are giving him way too much credit. He originally made this quote to a small newspaper in Marshall. Not exactly the NY Times.
