It's comical how often this conversation comes up. We all miss Randy, but if memory serves me right, weren't the same things said about Randy too?
Hell, I specifically remember being on here before the Nebraska game and Aubrey saying something about we don't know if we can win a game off Randy's leg. Everyone was so worried about that and he sucked and if it came down to that, we were toast. Now he's a a Groza winner and the guy everyone wants back.
You guys are calling for the head of a freshman kicker. Yes he has a job, yes he should make his field goals but to completely abandon the kid not even all the way through his first year of playing is nothing short of insanity. Should we really list out every single player we should have have up on after they didn't live up to their hype after one year? I think a guy in Denver might have to protest to that.
Do I get pissed every damn time he misses? Just as mad as anyone. But letting my frustration get in the way of seeing a bigger picture with this kids talent is a sure sign of stupidity. Our best option is to give the job to someone who has never kicked in a high pressure situation? Dude please.

I'm not calling for his head... I think players perform better when their is competition. Even if there isn't a competent alternative on the roster, I'd run somebody else out there on FGs until Bertolet walked up to me and told me he was ready to take that job back. I know its not talent, its all mental. He needs a kick in the ass, not a coddling.

I agree with what you're saying. I'm not saying he should be handed the job either. Competition will bring out the best in him. It was more in response in the "he sucks, take the scholarship comments". Coach him, push him and reap the benefits. Don't take the Al Davis approach and fire someone every single year.

Serious question: Do you want 2 kickers on scholarship at all times. We would want 2 punters by the same logic. I'm not saying this is wrong. I am really just asking if anyone wants 4 scholarships taken up by the punt/kick unit.
What is the norm in most schools? anyone know? Does the extra competition really help? As terrifically underrated as the kicking game is, I would think this would be the norm if it really worked.

I heard an interview by the Chicago Bears kicker (Gould?) this summer at a charity golf tournament. He said that a usual practice day for him is about 40-50 kicks. Anymore than that and the risk of stress fracture increase, and that would mean losing your kicker for 6-8 weeks.
I feel your pain. But calling for him to lose his scholarship 3/4 the way through the season, or draconian practice routines isn't really helpful.
Unfortunately, I think the answer is to put up with it this season, then call for walkons for extra competition in the spring. If he still is having trouble in 2013, THEN recruit a kicker for 2014. Sucks, but can you give me a better, realistic plan?

My suggestion would be to not think of them as football players. They're more headcases than anything else. At least on every college level team I've worked with.
Think of them like you would pro golfers. They should be able to nail 90% of any six foot putt. Do they? For most, the answer is no. Headcases. We all know that Tiger should be the most dominant player for a 20 year span. But he sleeps with the nanny and he's half the player he was. It's a mental thing.
It sucks, but what do you do?.....

But can they kick from 35 yds and in at kyle field in front of 85K? The physical part is easier than the mental....
I've got to think as loud as Kyle is when the other guys have the ball, the quiet that happens when he lines up to kick is almost as disconcerting.

It's not that practice makes perfect, it's perfect practice makes perfect. Taylors initial problems were & still are mechanical. Failures due to mechanics flowed into problems between the ears. On other posts I've gone into his issues with mechanics. We are at the point where complaining is not going to accomplish anything. It's evident our kicking coach is not up to the task of coaching Taylor out of this slump. Seems to me we should leaning on Bertolets kicking coach instead of taking frustrations out on TB. Keep doin what you're doin you'll keep gettin what you've got, old & still true. Since Randy Bullock has a little free time maybe he could come to College Station a day or two a week & work with Taylor. Some of you guys sound like a lynch mob. Complaining about what is wrong is easy to do & right now TB is an easy target. Get a new kicking coach is where i'd start.
