Byrne did not get fired

He made it known that he wants to retire a year or so ago. He's almost 70. He was not up to the SEC challenge. He was a good AD, but both parties wanted to move on. I keep reading about people being sorry for how he was fired--he wasn't.

That's where you are being very naive. He was forced out, plain and simple. They put a show on and made it look nice but at the end of the day he was given his walking papers.

The guy is like 70. He's been saying he didn't want to come back. I believe he would've been fired if he wanted to come back, but he didn't and he wasn't.

He was not fired. He came up with the idea to retire early so it would not affect our move to the SEC. Some people in the media need to talk to some guys around the board and big donors to get the real story

I agree with this. Other coaches have alluded to as much also. Retirement or getting fired were his options. Really just semantics.

Now or a year from now, what's the difference? Oh, except why have a guy who isn't on board with the SEC lead us into our first season in the SEC knowing it's going to be his last? Doesn't seem very proactive. Now is better than a year from now for our perspective, and it shouldn't make a difference from Byrnes. Actually, since he's still getting paid, I'd be happy if I were him.

I'm in a position to know. Bowen was very unhappy with him. He did not enjoy the confidence of his boss.

The airlines have a mandatory retirement policy by age. They don't make exceptions. For Southwest Airlines, it's 60.
When my buddy's dad turned 60, he retired. In no way, shape, or form, did he want to retire. It simply wasn't his option.
Byrne "retired" in similar fashion, except A&M has no such policy except for the one they made for Byrne.
