Can you believe we haven't landed a 5* defensive player

  • In 13 years.

    Let me repeat. We have NOT signed a 5* defensive recruit since the class of 2000. And he was a complete bust!

    The class before ('99; which was A&M's best class on paper since the birth of internet fan websites) Ty Warren was only a four star.

    Texas produces dozens and dozens and dozens of D1 talent each year and we recruit 98% of our kids from Texas yet we can't land star level defensive talent.

    Teams that land the 5* defensive talent win big games. Programs like LSU, OU, Alabama and Texas land 5* defensive talent. They play for crystal trophies.

    Sumlin has a tough tough road in front of him. Damn.

  • I know a lot of you may not like him, but his post is still true. That's a long time to not land any of the top defenders in Texas. Who was the one after Ty warren that was a bust?

  • Yup, and damn near each and every one of you cried like sissies when I pointed this out. Even though it's very directly correlated to the fact that we haven't been a good football team in basically the same time period.

  • What does that have to do with NOW? Give this coach a few years. Starting a new weekly thread about our previous coaches lack of recruiting success doesnt help the team, nor does it make me want to continue purchasing a premium to hear that utter nonsense.

    This is going to end up being the best class in a VERY long time and in year 1 when the coaches have yet to build those relationships that generally start in a players sophmore year.

    When you and benny got something better than this let me know. Shit pm me first. All you guys do is cry like a bunch of puzzies about every little thing.

    When we have a coach that sticks around and WINS some games then we will be able to land some top notch recruits.

  • You know what else is crazy, there have been 5 5* defensive recruits from Texas since 2010, tu got 3, Florida state got 1, and Baylor got 1 (we should have freakin landed Magee). Also, there are zero 5 star defensive recruits from Texas so far in 2013. I know it would be nice, but until we can start stealing top recruits from other states or from tu, it will be tough.

  • Boise St. rarely gets 3* let alone 4* recruits and they've found a way to win. TCU's recruiting classes have been in the 30's during the Patterson years and they've been very solid defensively. I know neither has not played that tough of schedules, but they've had success when they played the big boys.

    Last point - we very likely would have had McGee if we had kept Big Sherm. Would that have made some of you happy? I personally, would rather have coaches that can identify athletes then coach players up - which I think we have.

    But I don't think it's reasonable to expect us to get 5 stars right away. I believe that we will get them after we begin to show everyone just how serious we are. I believe we can prove our worth in the SEC with what we have and after proving it the 5 stars will jump on board.

  • The Sam Houston product along with his coach got paid. Nothing Sherman could have done. Benny is right though. We definitely need to step up our defensive recruiting. Especially on the defensive line.

    I think some are just weary because they've taken a wait-and-see approach with the last two coaches and been burned. At this point I'm fully behind Sumlin and his staff because, so far, they've done everything right. I think it's more of an indictment of the last two staffs that we haven't landed any 5 star defensive recruits in so long. I don't expect Sumlin to have landed any yet in his three or four months on the job

  • I agree with jay, wise young grasshopper. We say so many times that stars don't really matter but in reality we all look at them and want more stars. But look, right now there are like 3 or 4 defensive recruits from Texas in the top 100, manning is 1, we have golden at 2, and I believe Mitchell and prevot are the next. We have a ligitimate shot at all of them with the longest shot being manning. Let it play out, get some of these lower rated guys to exceed expectations, and turn the tide.

  • My apologies, manning is the ONLY Texas defensive recruit in the top 100. Add miles and hall and that is all of texas's defensive recruits in the top 200
