Can you believe we haven't landed a 5* defensive player

  • ChallengerAg said...

You know what else is crazy, there have been 5 5* defensive recruits from Texas since 2010, tu got 3, Florida state got 1, and Baylor got 1 (we should have freakin landed Magee). Also, there are zero 5 star defensive recruits from Texas so far in 2013. I know it would be nice, but until we can start stealing top recruits from other states or from tu, it will be tough.

I think this is the most interesting post. There aren't that many defensive 5 stars in general and only a small subset are from Texas. I agree with Jay in that having some consistency and wins will attract more top talent, but I don't think 5 stars are a necessity to achieve success. TU, Alabama and LSU get 5 stars because they are successful not the other way around. Benny may be kind of a downer, but I like that he stirs some s hit every once in a while and gets everyone discussing something.

  • Benny and Cam know what they are talking about, and are keeping us honest. Until we consistantly get top talent on defense it will be tough in the SEC. We need to have speed and depth in the worst way.

Everybody that has followed A&M for the past decade knows what Benny and Cam keep saying. Everybody is just tired of hearing that they act like Sumlin is not aware our defense needs to improve and that he hasn't recruited at least 3 5* on defense in his first three months.

I don't think the intent of the thread has anything to do with Sumlin. Coach Sumlin has been tearing it up since he's been here. You still have to remember that we are playing in the SEC now, where defense isn't a want, it's a necessity to survive.

In previous threads, Cameron has said that Sherman recruited better defensive players than Sumlin, and basically said Sumlin can't recruit defensive players. Maybe he had a bad day that day.

Well, I don't see that happening but time will tell.

Benny has been sniping at Sumlin for 3 months now jumping on everything from to slow to get a Staff to who he is recruiting. In the fall he will badmouth the playcalling and anything else he can find wrong. You're right in that he just stirs up shit, but what I would really like to see is a breakdown of opponents, their system and how to attack it, what the correct alignment should be, what personnel are best suited for situaltional substituting, positioning on defense, what coverage scheme to run facing which formations, evaluations of players who are being recruited, etc to determine and be assured he understands football and/or has played and is capable of critiquing a professional in the system.

I believe the OP statement of internet fan websites beginning in 1999 should be scrutinized to see if this is true or what is thought to be true or pertaining to aTm specifically.

That would definitely be more productive. I was as mad as anyone about the Sumlin hire, but he has made me stick my foot in my mouth. How you could dislike Sumlin at this point is beyond me.

  • Another bone to pick on this subject is what does the OP expect this year as if he would look before he leaps the closest D 5*s for this year according to this site are in Ga or Indiana, the bulk are Fl and East Coast or the West Coast and we have offers and have been in contact with several of these players. This year and a disturbing trend that is developing in Texas is the 5* D player is not to be found in this state because of the Spread and all the best players basically being funneled to the O side of the ball.

  • Off topic, but does anyone else think it's weird that one of our current verbal commits is posting. Don't get me wrong, Jay you are very welcome here and I appreciate your insight and intelligence. It just seems... wrong or something.

Agree. Just hope he takes everything with a grain of salt. Fans will say pretty harsh things sometimes without knowing all the facts. They may not about Jay, but maybe about other guys he may know. If i was a player I would probably not want to be on a fan board, but since he is I am glad he is a solid contributor and seems like a really cool, level headed guy. He seems like a guy who is going to be a great leader on the team in a few years. Guys like him and Matt Davis can boost everyone around them to play and be better. I'm definitely glad he decided on the Ags! This program is moving up in a hurry!

    In 13 years.

Let me repeat. We have NOT signed a 5* defensive recruit since the class of 2000. And he was a complete bust!

The class before ('99; which was A&M's best class on paper since the birth of internet fan websites) Ty Warren was only a four star.

Texas produces dozens and dozens and dozens of D1 talent each year and we recruit 98% of our kids from Texas yet we can't land star level defensive talent.

Teams that land the 5* defensive talent win big games. Programs like LSU, OU, Alabama and Texas land 5* defensive talent. They play for crystal trophies.

Sumlin has a tough tough road in front of him. Damn.

High school 5 star defensive players in Texas are extremely overrated. Really, the defensive talent in this state is just plain bad if you compare it to states like La, Bama, Ga, Fla, etc. So I wouldn't throw a fit over A&M not signing a 5 star...99% of the talent that gets rated a 5 star has no business being rated that high. REAL 5 star defensive talent does not exist in Texas like it does in the South.... We just don't produce that kind of talent anymore.

  • It's also worth noting that we got the overall #1 defensive stud in the nation in Von. The services just didn't have him pegged right.

    cameron00

  • Von was the exception to the rule in Texas. Rivals (ie Ketch and Bobby Burton) said he was a bad talent b/c he was a tweener and didn't have a college position. So they didn't like him. Von had elite talent, but guys like him come along once every 10 years in Texas. Bama has guys like him littered on their roster except they weigh 260lbs their freshman year.

    Xterminator

  • Bama doesnt have a single player like Von on their roster. I watch a lot of Bama football and they havent had a pass rusher on their roster with the first step and athleticism of Von since Derrick Thomas.

As long as people like Ketch are involved in the evaluation, there is going to be a problem. I heard Jackie Sherrill speak one time at a coaches clinic and he railed on Rivals. Said he looked for kids that fit his system, period.

  • I understand the arguments against Von at the time, but the head coach at DeSoto, a guy that clearly knows talent when he sees it, came out and very publicly made a comment to the effect of,

"I'm not sure what these ranking services are doing. If Von isn't a 5-star, there isn't one out there."

He had offers from Florida and LSU. It wasn't like he was some huge secret.
