Chip's Day in Aggieland

  • It was a rough Saturday morning for me, but with some not so gentle prodding, I got out of bed and headed to College Station. I It has been far too long since I've stepped foot on campus, and I took full advantage of by going to the M&W game, walking around the entire newly renovated MSC, checking out Blue Bell Park, driving by the construction of the new tunnel under Wellborn, etc.

These may be restated, but here are my brief Spring Game observations:
    - Manziel is a great athlete, but is just not there as a passer. The one TD to Swope was a lame duck that Swope had to slow down to catch but then out ran everyone to the endzone.
    - LeKendrick's wide open TD drop killed me. That cannot happen. I thought this Spring was focused on CATCHING the ball? Beep Beep didn't get the memo.
    - Askew definitely had the best catch of the day, right next to the sideline.
    - All 3 RBs looked dang good. B Williams is a beast and Malena and Randolph both looked better than expected.
    - Not sure if it was a product of the safeties blowing it, or the passing game going well, but the middle of the field was wide open very often.
    - I thought Matt Joeckel looked better than Manziel in his limited snaps.
    - Swope looked amazing as usual.

    MSC Observations:
Holy tits. Very very impressed (as I should be after 3 years and millions of dollars). I'll post some pics and kind of describe what's there for those that haven't been there.

Blue Bell looks even better in person.

The Player Development Center is coming along pretty well.

The new tunnel under Wellborn is a great idea.

Left: This is the SEC A&M sign shermmanager was talking about that's on HWY 6 going towards College Station. Pretty cool.
Mid: This is the front side of a poster they were giving out at the Spring Game.
Right: The back side has the whole roster, complete with (presumably) updated heights and weights. So, if you want to know someone's weight, just ask.

More pics to come in more posts.

  • Left: Loyalty entrance (far right side)
Mid: Reveille Grill - pretty cool eating area just inside the Loyalty entrance. Burgers are OK so far, service was very slow. Could just be new opening kinks.
RIght: 12th Man Hall, next to Loyalty entrance, with an information kiosk.

  • Left: These are the gaming pods in the MSC basement. The coolest part of these is that sound doesn't travel outside of the pod area because of the way they set up the speakers.
Mid: view of the stairway leading to the 12th Man Hall from the basement.
Right: View of the basement with the pool tables and gaming pods.

Mid: View of the 12th Man Hall from the 2nd floor.
Right: View of the Flag Room from the 2nd floor.

    Mid: 12th Man Hall mural
Right: Blue Bell Park in person. Really enjoyed seeing this.

  • This last picture is of some construction near the corner of Wellborn and University, on the campus side of the street. Anyone know what it is? Looks like it could be some new dorms.

I realize the pictures aren't of the best quality, and I actually wish I took more of the bookstore (VERY VERY nice, huge selection of snacks/food, clothing, hats, coffee shop). There's also a place to get food in the basement, and there's a brand new cafeteria on the 1st floor (wasn't open to us).

  • No, the construction on University is for the new Northside Residence Hall, due to be finished for Fall 2013. http://reslife.tamu.edu/construction/reshalls/

University Dr. itself is being redone, with College Main being turned into a pedestrian plaza between Patricia St and University, Houston st being closed in front of the post office, and a light being installed at Boyette St where the gas station is. Here's the video rendering: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DV5J6CXL4eA

The corps dorm renovation is for Harrell Hall right on Coke St... http://reslife.tamu.edu/construction/corps/

For those who haven't seen, the underpass video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCPBYk7A8gc&feature=related

You can go to the campus map and click on all the construction areas for more info: http://aggiemap.tamu.edu/
