Got some very cool gifts tonight from my dad, ones I didn't even know existed until today.
First off, I asked him for this Bulova watch I've had my eye on for awhile. Well, I got the watch...but, I also get a second Bulova. This watch was passed down from my great grandpa, to my father, to me. Made in the early 1920's-30's, 12k gold case, self winding, and shock resistant. Very cool. (Also thought it was awesome that the watch I wanted was the exact brand of the watch being passed to me.)
Second item, a Norwegian fishing knife passed down from my great-great-great grandfather. My grandpa on my mother's side gave it to my father with the intention of passing it on to me at the right time.
Apparently, both right times were today. Needless to say, I'm pretty pumped about these family heirlooms.
Great gifts! You should be really proud.
I am! When my dad was telling me about both items, you could tell how much they meant to him and the men that came before him.
I'm curious if getting the watch and knife cleaned with do damage to them. Think it'd be cool if I showed my grandpa and dad them all shined up, lookin new.
I wouldn't get em cleaned just anywhere chip
Your logic is boggling my mind
Definitely not. Won't be rushing into it. Just a thought right now.
That's awesome, man. Wish my family had something like that
I'd think cleaning the watch up would be a bit more costly and selective, knife could use a once over from a good silver vendor. I'd check with the manufacturer for the watch, they might be able to help you or point you in the right direction.

I have some things of my Grandfathers that I will give to my son when the time is right, I hope they mean as much to him as they do me. Much more valuable in sentiment than anything else, but he was a great man in my eyes just as my dad is to my son. It's nice to hear how much your heirlooms mean to you.
I had a similar Bulova revitalized and highly recommend this place.
It was my grandfathers - given to him by my grandmother for Valentines Day in 1940.
