Big blow to the Texans. Only FA we needed to resign. Must now address safety high in the draft or through FA with an older vet that'll take a 1-2 year 3 mil deal.
The Texans are really poorly managed. They draft pretty well, and identify talent well, but they never plan for the future with their signings. Two seasons in a row where they are letting quality, starting-caliber players go because they have so much cap space tied up in so few players. They should have seen this one coming last season.
And I agree with thrownhill. With the limited success(and only recent) they have had, there is no reason for them to have the salary cap issues they current.
Plus, they have Cushing's deal coming up, and Watt's soon after...
They'll have to rework deals with Schaub, foster and AJ to work a deal with Watt. Or cut one or more of them.
Smith also has Abigail contract that is up next year,
An already bad secondary just got worse.
I'd imagine all three will be gone in a few years.
This is a buyers market in terms of safeties. Chill out fellas.
apparently it's not a done deal.
Who did they lose last year that was a "quality, starting caliber player" other than Brisiel, who got money-whipped by Oakland (a terrible organization)?
I love Glover but safeties are kind of a meh commodity in the NFL. You can draft a guy or find him in free agency that can do most of what Glover did. It's not like our secondary was nails last year (though admittedly he was probably the best guy back there).
You can't pay everyone, and I think the Texans think Barwin has more value than Quin because he is a pass-rusher and those are hard to come by whereas safeties are not. They just can't pull the same old crap where they grab someone off the street and start him at safety. They have to sign someone in free agency or use a relatively high draft pick on a safety.
New England and Pittsburgh (and now Baltimore) do this kind of thing all the time. You have to be smart in free agency and overpaying guys is the quickest way to get burned and in salary cap hell.
Winston (don't tell me you wanted Newton over him)
We're already in salary cap hell. We have to redo people's contracts left and right just to sign our draft picks. With Cushing needing a new deal after this season, and Watt the next, we're f'd.
Time for a mini rebuild. No way Schaub stays past this year. Can't cut him now because he would cost too much, but next year he's toast. Then you have an aging Antonio Smith and Chris Myers. Both won't be here for long.

Every team loses guys to Free Agency. Have to be able to draft well and have guys lined up to replace them. Has a team ever consistently been as bad at drafting in the secondary as the Texans? Why have they ignored their WR depth problem for so long? Need a higher hit rate. Consistently drafting well will help cover a lot of bad contracts.
"I like Bears and if you're going to be a bear, UMMMMM, BE A Grizzley"
Guys like Glover Quin should not be considered a big loss. He is an average NFL safety. You should be able to replace him with a 3rd or 4th rounder.
My big issue was that we have so many hole that demand high draft picks, adding safety to those holes is just piling on.
WR, RT, NT, ILB, 3rd OLB, and now safety? Too many needs, not enough draft picks. We need to address at least one of those positions in FA.
Well it looks like Ed Reed is visiting the Texans so you may get your wish.
They cut Winston (he was under contract), so obviously they did't like him at his price. I would have preferred him over Newton but the Texans disagreed, and those are the choices that NFL teams have to make all the time. That is not unique to the Texans.
Mario? Come on. That was the best thing that could have happened to the Texans.
You're right about Schaub- he likely won't last past this season unless the Texans go to the Super Bowl or at least the AFC Championship Game. The good thing is his guaranteed money is only for 2 more years.
Agreed on Smith (I could see them restructuring him this year or maybe cutting him) but Myers was the best center in the league last year and is not a declining player.
Don't worry about guys like Glover Quin and Barwin. Worry when we start losing stud players that actually matter like Cushing, Watt, J-Joe, etc.
Schaub will restructure his contract after this year or take a pay cut (the guaranteed money won't be there) he would rather make 10 mill than nothing at all
He won't be picked up for more than 3 million as a free agent.
Antoine Smith is a de we need to resign next year as well but JJ will have to get the full boat.
the Texans needs a stud draft.
I am talking about 3 starters and 2-3 role players. safeties, te's, guards, fb's, should have high hit rates.
First rounders should be immediate hit rates and you got to be good in the 2nd.
Wade's system is very friendly for ilb's, rush olb's, and nose tackes to play early.
Hard for db's. a lot of pressure in coverage..
They lost several key players to free agency last year and didn't replace them.
They got little to no positive contribution from their draft picks last year. Jones was decent but wasnt an improvement over Brisiel. We'll see if Mecilus can step up this year.
But, you can't keep losing key guys and not replacing them. They need starters out of this draft class.
Cushing will not be a Texan after next year. He'll want too much and it's a position you can draft. His house is for sale if that gives you an idea.
