I was really about to let you guys have it but I asked myself what Mary Sue would do...
Lent is only for the weekdays right?, can I give up heroin during the week but still do it on weekends?
Help needed, thanks in advance
Honest ? why/where does it say scripturely to have this Lent week and giving up something?
I have read the Bible and I have read the books that the Catholic Bible has that the Protestant Bible doesnt like Maccabees and Tobith and the 2nd book of Daniel, etc.
I also read the acrophylia for the information (not accepting it) but I do accept the Book of Enoch because Jesus quoted it as well as the Book of Jubilees (which isn't inspired but historical).
is it traditional and customary (which I have no problem with) or is it a duty/obedience? If so, I am trying to figure where it's commanded.

I gave up my lent today. Picked it out of my navel and flicked it onto the shower wall.
I am eating delicious Strip Sirloin Steak in front of my 2 Catholic Secreteries that can't tell me why they won't eat meat lol
You sure it hit the shower wall?, when I was at the store yesterday there was this guy walking around with some chitt on his forehead, perhaps your lint hit him.
The fish on Friday thing is actually because Fridays and holy days during lent are days meant for fasting. However, the no meat part of it actually started during WWII as part of the war effort for meat rations and its become, for lack of a better word, tradition. As I've always understood, Lent is the season designated for people to pay reverence to the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert before he began his public teachings/ministry.
I was raised Catholic and have since switched.
I love giving my shiite-Catholic mother a hard time about some of the Catholic traditions.
Man o Man
As many know I run a predominantly seafood restaurant. Hispanic I am. Was born a Catholic, but now attend a Non-Denominational Church (Aggies are the Pastors). I get more out of this church than I ever had growing up and attending the Catholic church. I don't judge as long as you have the good Lord in your life.
Well, I worked my arse off all day long serving up the fish. This time of the year is slamming busy for us on Fridays (no meat Friday's). It's a time of the year that we look forward to. After a 12 our shift I decided to visit a bar down the road by my place. The bartender that I know sets down an ice cold Alaskan White. He looks at me and says, "Did you give up beer for Lent?" I said, "Yes.......Nah, I'm just kidding!" I told him I was raised a Catholic, but now I'm not. I also stated that I considered giving up beer for a little bit and going straight whiskey and water. The guy next to me looks at me in discuss and proclaims that he is a highly devoted Catholic. He tells me that those that pretend to give up stuff is frowned upon by his religion. That really tickled my innerds, I looked at him, starred at him for a second, and told him that I felt very bad for him. I then said, "My religion really frowns upon pastors touching little boys..." He didn't like that so much and closed out.
I don't have a problem with any religion and don't come at me with non-sense. Pray, have faith, and trust in the Lord.
That was my story. Carry on.
I'm a Protestant but have practiced Lent for the last 12 years. Lent is not commanded in Scripture but practicing the spiritual disciplines are strongly encouraged: Basically any practice that causes you to refocus your dependency on Christ like praying, fasting, solitude, service etc. Since I wasn't raised Catholic I haven't fully discovered all the rich reasons for it, but as I understand and practice it, it is a time before Easter of fasting from something that you treasure to refocus on Christ and his work on the cross. For example, if every time I want a dessert or a soda or coffee or beer or a cigar or red meat, or whatever I am fasting from, it causes me to remember that I am abstaining from it for Christ's sake it causes me to reflect more often on Him. It's a small act of private (and corporate) devotion that symbolizes my testiment that faith in Christ is all I need and that I truly need Him.
I have no problem with fasting, praying, and doing things for Elohim. In fact, it's encouraged.
but isn't lent a command in the Catholic church for folks not to eat meat, to give up something of their sinful flesh, and to do other things?
Lent Actually came about as a merger between Jesus (Yeshua) fasting for 40 days and the Weeping of Tammuz (the son of Nimrod and Semi Ramis) the founder of all pagan religions. Study the scripture.
When Tammuz who was (miraculously) born to Semi Ramis and a dead (believed to be reincarnated Nimrod) he was impregnated during Easter Time (Ishtar is the other name for Semi Ramis and Ishtar is pronounced Easter) and then born 8.5 months later at the Winter Equinox or whatever it's called. Then Tammuz was killed by a pig at the age of 40 years old and that was the merger of 40 days of fasting with 40 years of Tammuz to attract pagans into Christianity.
Any of you heathens every wonder why christ was crucified on passover and raised again on the Feast of First Fruits?
Christians should be celebrating Passover and not Easter which was the pagan influx. You can't get raised on the 3rd day dieing Friday and raising on Sunday. that's 2 days however you slice it.
I think Lent is a good thing, I just want those that follow it to know why they do? I still haven't been given a scriptural reference to it other than Jesus fasted for 40 days.
dMo, i was raised catholic until 6-7. I don't remember a lot of things. I don't blame my fellow Catholic believers for some of their priest being pedofiles. But I do blame the entity of the instituition of the CAtholic church which has become a political force (always has been to a large degree) for covering it up. but many of my Catholic friends are some of the finest men/women that I know and they have a heart for God. We have good religious discussions. I always just ask, do you have a open for the truth or to be right. As you study more the Word of God, you start realizing half the stuff you have been taught was incorrect and it's right there in the scripture in front of you.
one other thing. If you go to Israel and go to Copernaum I believe. Next to Peter (Keifa's) house is a Synagogue.. on the walls of the Synagogue are inscriptions in Hebrew to God and to Peter as a dedication/memorial to Peter that his family and friends built as a dedication and memorial to his ministry and where Peter worshipped. He worshipped in Israel in a synagogue and he did it on the Sabboth which was on Friday 6 pm to Saturday 6 pm (called the Shabbot). not on Sun God worship day or better known as sunday which again was changed do attract those pagan sun god worshippers to christianity.

Can't we all get back to just laughing at the video?
The catholic church is the most corrupt and contemptable body in the history of the world. I have no problem with God fearing Catholics, but the Catholic Church is a joke to me.
If anyone has ever studied the history of the Catholic Church it is very entertaining. Political Corruption, incest, pedopihlia. Everything that Washington has become the Catholic Church has been two and three times over.
but they do convert their water to tequila
It is not commanded in the Bible. It is a tradition from the Roman Catholic Church (the 1st century church did not have it).
I haven't looked it up but I would think it last 40 days to mimick Jesus' 40 days of temptation in the desert.
what's your thoughts on Peter from Rome being the last Pope?
This is correct.
I am not very familiar with this (actually, I am not even Catholic).
I do know that people believe that there can be many popes between Peter the Roman and the previous Pope on the list ("glory of the olive" pope which is predicted to have been Benedict XVI).
I also know that it is believed that Peter the Roman is supposed to bring about the Apocalypse. When I say know, I mean I think I know. Please correct me if I am wrong... I'd love to learn more.
I am of the belief that it is coming "soon" (and remember soon is very relative - particularly if you are talking about God, but if you believe and read Revelation and understand some of the signs, they are happening all around us).

Can we please get back on topic and discuss the awesomeness of this video...
Is that Bennyboy working the fog machine in the background?
Good work Benjamin.
I was reflecting and this isn't your thread Hugh, & yes that's me
I have no issue with traditions that are encouraged because traditions make up society. That's a good thing and doing things for God is usually good.
I don't necessarily believe in forced/commanded things that aren't from God but maybe Lent isn't a commanded deal in the Catholic church but highly encouraged and I think that's a good thing.
