Is this right? KK is hiring Jets OLB coach Mike Smith to be his DC? Smith has 1 year of coaching experience after spending 2 years as an intern with the Jets before being promoted this year. He is another former teammate of Kliff at TT so he's only 31.
Other members of the staff at TT that I've read reports about are:
Kevin Curtis- DB coach. also a teammate of KK at TT. Coached 2 years at Navarro and the last 3 at La Tech. DB coaches for teams that were dead last in the country in pass defense aren't exactly in high demand especially when putting together a staff in the Big 12 but not many guys are willing to move to Lubbock and that was pretty much the only requirement to fill this position.
Eric Morris- former TT player who graduated in 2007. 1 year of coaching experience at WSU this past season. As a small, white WR he was a "coach on the field" during his playing days so that should transfer well to being a coach on the sidelines.
Trey Haverty- former TT player who graduated in 2004. 2 years of D1 coaching experience at TCU. As a small, white WR he was a "coach on the field" during his playing days so that should transfer well to being a coach on the sidelines.
Sonny Cumbie is already an assistant there so I'm sure he'll stay on.
I'll be very interested to see how this turns out.
He was hired as "Co-Defensive Coordinator."
So tech is trying to be the school that has an alumni coaching staff, how'd that worked for AnYOne EvEr
Your logic is boggling my mind
Could be a messy breakup if all doesnt work out in Lubbock with KK and the alumni staff
KK hired the OL coach from U of H. Don't think he has Tech ties and he's the granddad on this staff - 45 years old.
Tech had to know this was going to happen though, as I said during the whole thing, Kingsbury just doesn't have a network of people willing to put their careers in his hands yet. It's going to be a young staff though so there's a lot of potential.

U did call it Aubrey
Will Wally be his co-DC? Tardsters acting like its a done deal post-bowl game.
Proverbs 10:4 (NIV)
Lazy hands make for poverty,
but diligent hands bring wealth.
Why would Wally want to go to Tech to be co-DC?
If it''s Wally then they just hired 2 DBs coaches and 2 LBs coaches on defense and won't have anyone on the staff who has any experience coaching a DL. What a disaster.
Haha Trey Haverty coached me 1 year at midlothian about 6 years ago. Interesting staff
Weird choices. This will end poorly.
well, two sites have confirmed "discussions" but nothing on Wally's interest. It sounded like he was thinking about it.
The Lee Hays' hire (OL coach at Houston) doesn't sound good. Sounds like the UH folks were glad he's gone and Baylor fans having nothing good to say about him.
Just seems like a really bad career move for Wally.
The lack I experience this staff has is frightening. As if recruiting to Lubbock wasn't bad enough now they won't even have coaches with skins on the wall so to speak.
How is a staff with less than 20 years combined coaching experience(maybe15 when it's all said and done) be able to even have a clue how to develop a team and make adjustments with personnel over the course if a season. I hate to say it but Kliff looks like he walked into a train wrech waiting to happen.
Whats coaching spots on his staff still need to be filled?
No Kliff is driving the train
This isn't Kliff's fault it's Hocutt's.
OC - KK said he's doing it.
So that leaves:
QB coach? -
RB Coach -
Special Teams coach - KK interview a guy at Southern Arkansas for this job.
At least five slots.
Only a few teams achieve great success (half the teams lose every week) so the odds are against him no matter who he gets to fill out the staff. But don't be surprised if he hires a group of young, smart, energetic guys who are on a mission and they wind up doing well. I wish him good luck, as I do with most anybody.
