I don't miss the days of him complaining about our "small crowds" that would show up to watch the basketball team play.

Agreed. I would gladly stab anyone of you to death to get Turge back here.
He was right.
At the time I was sort of happy he left. Now?
I used to laugh at the people happy to see him go. Yeah, all the guy does is make the tournament and threaten to win the conference every year... he sucks! Good lord I miss basketball.
Was? Still is. F him.

I was a loyal attendee of basketball games during Turgeons tenure. One year I only missed the games over break. I got really tired of his complaining about attendance and student support. He never won a game in front of a big crowd at home and a couple he absolutely got crushed (tu and bu) in front of a sold out arena. Good basketball coach but not a good permanent fit for him here.
Great coach. Nice guy. We didn't deserve him. He is a blue blood coach. He thought we were the minor leagues... We're doing our best to prove him correct.
Mostly agreed. In his last year, we were one of like 5-6 schools with the longest running consecutive NCAA tournament appearance streak. Yeah we lost some big time games @ Reed, but we were also consistently a Top 25 team. Our attendance was still crap - nobody wants to hear bitching, but he wasn't wrong and hard to blame him for voicing it. Had a consistently good program and couldn't draw dick to the arena unless it was Texas/Baylor/Kansas.
Nobody likes to be told they suck, but for a school our size with a Top 25 tournament caliber team to have the support it had - sucked.

Yeah, I don't necessarily think he handled his frustrations the best way, but like you said, our support was pretty sad given where we were as a program.
To look at it from Turgeon's perspective though, he played at KU then coached at Wichita State, which literally averages twice as many fans a game as A&M. And he left that great support to be an offseason distraction in Aggieland whose teams were was only supported when the fans felt it was convenient.
Problem was that he didn't exactly light the world on fire with his recruiting or take the program to the next level, either. We actually went down a notch from where BCG had it. And this year was not going to be an especially good one with what he was bringing in.
Don't get me wrong. I would take him over Kennedy in a heartbeat. But his level of performance did not match his level of whining.
Turgeon had many opportunities to capture the fan base and help his cause. For whatever reason he couldn't capitalize. I don't think he bought into A&M and it showed. He is a good basketball coach, but I don't think he liked us and we sure didn't like him.
He wasn't cut out to be the basketball coach at a football school. He is a very good basketball coach though. He just doesn't have a style that brings people to watch. No one wants to watch a slowed down grind it out team. Billy got people there because he was Billy. Turgeon wasn't that kind of personality and his style of play didn't excite people. He squeezed a lot of talent out of some not so great teams though.
I liked Turgeon a lot. Still do. I was a fan of his during his Wichita State days. I'll always believe that his single biggest transgression was just being someone other than Billy Gillispie. BCG became some sort of cult phenomenon so quickly that Turgeon was always living in Gillispie's shadow.
I'll be happy with anyone who can consistently get A&M to the tourney. From there, it's mostly a crapshoot determined by luck of the draw anyway.

yep, he sucked at recruiting and mostly left the cupboard bare as well. he was left in a good position by BCG and A&M as a program built him new basketball locker rooms, new practice court/facilities, and basically a lot of nice and shiny new stuff to attract the recruits. But either his style of play or his lack of recruiting made it such that we didn't get the players we could have gotten.
Compare that to Sherman leaving a good situation for Sumlin to take over...and Sumlin kickin' ass and taking it up a notch on wins and recruiting.
Having said that, I'd take the steady 20+ win seasons and Tourney appearances compared to where we are now, unfortunately. :(
HAMM you are so right, he should have worried about HIS team playing better, don't bitch and moan about the fans.... This really pissed me off when I was in school going to the games and his inability to recruit a pg who could shoot was so frustrating
