Want to get everyones opinion on how this shakes out... Im sure its been kicked around before. But at this point its not only obvious that Johnny is sticking around with his ability but this staff picks their players and sticks with them through thick and thin (i.e. Summlins comments on Bertolet)
With that being says does Davis back up Manziel for the next 3 years and possibly have a shot at being a senior starter (With Kohl and Hill coming in he may be the worst 'passer' on the team) or does this staff make the switch and move him to safety or Wr.
Personally with the depth at WR and QB i think its worth it to give him a shot at safety... Kid is a natural born leader and football player and whereever he plays hes going to make a huge impact. He definety has the ability to play safety and I think in HS he lined up there every so often.
At this point it's just too hard to say for sure what he looks like in practice so it's impossible to project. I will say this for Davis though, he's a tenacious enough competitor that if he thought he could help the team and get on the field at safety before quarterback he would probably move himself there.
That's just my opinion though.

I want him to a be a QB, I really do, but I just don't think he will have much of an opportunity there. It's possible he can challenge JFF at some point (Maybe next year), but I just don't see it happening. I think safety would be a good place to start him out.
the only thing about safety is that he would be in completely different team meetings... tannehill played reciever and it helped him progress as a qb because he still got to go to qb meetings,in next two years though it'll be interesting to see what happens if JFF gets hurt or sidelined for a bit to see who comes in for him.
Playing and coaching football for most of my life im also a firm believer that playing quaterback helps you become a better WR and DB... your knowledge of the game as a whole just increases tremendously.
Especially at safety you know how to hide coverages better, you have a better idea of what routes teams are trying to run at you, you have a much better knowledge how to study film, you become much more vocal in the secondary (which is probably on the most import aspects of playing the safety position 'communication').
The one thing holding me back from his move to safety is requires a different type of athlete someone who can flip their hips, backpeddal stop on a dime and break on a route... Meanwhile offensive skill positions your constantly moving forward different types of movements.
Personally, I think Kohl goes MLB and Kenny slides in as Johnny's heir apparent. I love Matt as a person, but he's more raw athlete than QB. With our most glaring position concern for the future at safety, it'd be great if he could step in at Safety.
No offense Aubrey, but you don't KNOW Matt like Taylor KNOWS him. Would really appreciate Hamm's thoughts on this.

I also am really curious how this situation evolves Bc I was a big fan of Davis' athleticism and leadership in hs.
I think we keep him at qb next spring and fall to see how he compares to Showers, Joeckel, Hill and Stewart. If he can win the backup job or even steal the starting spot from JFF , he stays at qb. However if he is anything lower than second on the depth chart after next fall, we give him the option of moving to safety or WR.
I think WR is a waste for him, too many top end players at the position for him to make an impact... esp if both RSJ and Griffin make it... And I agree with cbarnes watching his tapes from his senior year hes just way too raw at QB, I dont see him overtaking Showers and Joekel.
My opinion, if he isnt the clear cut #2, as said before, he will move himself to Safety. At least to see what he can do and get on the field, since every snap after this year he is not on the field is a wasted snap in his eyes. If he has fluid movement and could turn into a great ball hawk and physical Safety, he could make a lot of money there. and I would bet not many people on the team would want it as much as him.
I want that kid on the field any way possible. Leader and great athlete.
I bet he would be a Patrick Bates-esq legendary safety. But I doubt he moves. With Kohl and Kenny coming in and Johnny having 3 more years, I just don't ever see Davis as a QB. But you never know.
Let me assure you he can stop, start, and change directions in a heartbeat. I could see him as an H-Back as well as a S, he is also strong enough to be a RB in an I Formation or the lead blocker. He has great football speed.
the guy hasn't even got his feet wet yet. let us see if we have a qb coach worth a damn to see if he can develop an athlete into a QB before he gets moved to safety. everyone deserves a chance to compete.
He was the best QB in the state last year... He came in as a QB and I think he stays there. If he never earns a starting job then that means we have a great back up QB for four years. Sometimes you can't underestimate how important that role is. People are so eager to move him because he's a great athlete, but he's only a RS fish still. He could very well earn the starting QB job for his senior year after Johnny is gone, he (and we) need to be patient and let him grow in the system. I still think he's going to do great things at the QB position for this team, whether that's as a starter or if it's coming off the bench at a critical moment.
He will be a qb or transfer.. too talented and too much of a leader..

By what metric are you saying he was the best QB in Texas last year?
I agree that Davis is too good a football player not to play. I think both Manziel or Davis, who ever is not the QB should be playing some position, slot or Safety. Manziel would play safety here and there in high school against good teams if they needed him too. Did everyone see those tackles he made against La Tech on that play where everyone thought the ball was fumbled. He caused a fumble and had two tackles in one play. He also played Slot and running back before becoming starting QB in High School. I don't think he is going to play anything but QB though, doing to well.

A backup quarterback will not play safety in the meantime. It doesn't help him learn the offense better at all, and exposes him to injury. Just look at all the injuries Judie and Campbell had. If Matt were moved to safety (which I doubt), it would be the kiss of death for his chances at qb.
Thus the name "Johnny Football" because he can do everything. But that's all irrelevant now because he is our QB now and for the next 3 years.
Only way Davis moves is if he doesn't get the backup job. If he can't beat out Showers/Joeckel with Kenny/Kohl coming in too then he won't be playing QB at A&M, and would be best suited to move positions. However, if he wins the backup job then he'll sit there until Manziel leaves.
It's a weird situation. I don't see him winning out over Kenny (or Kohl assuming we get him), but I don't see him quitting the fight for qb, and I definitely don't see him transferring. I think he either finishes his career holding a clipboard our Sumlin has a heart to heart with him and gets him to move positions for good.
I feel the same way, so for his sake I hope he moves to safety. Plus we really need safeties!
