I couldn't give two chits about them anymore but the chief office sip wanted to talk about the season yesterday afternoon, so I obliged.
During the conversation, I brought up the fact that their evaluation and recruitment of QBs was horrible. His belief is that it was Gilbert Grape that was the issue and that he was supposed to be the chosen one after Cart.
I rattled off that they were lucky that Cart turned out good for them since the great yellow toothed one lost Perrilloux on signing day to LSU.
Anyway, we went back and forth and back and forth, so I decided to do some research this morning and even I was surprised how badly they eval/ recruit QBs. Look at this mess. Swoopes is the latest example of ineptitude on their part.
2002 - Vencent Young (*****) – Last and best Texas QB
2003 - No QB taken
2004 - No QB taken
2005 - Colt McCoy (***) – Turned out good despite average ranking.
2005 - Ryan Perrilloux (*****) - Signing day switch to LSU and subsequent bust.
2006 - Sherrod Harris (***) - bust, left team without getting his shot.
2006 - Jevan Snead (****) - Transfers to Ole Miss.
2007 - G.J. Kinne (***) - Transfers to Tulsa. Finished his career with 9,472 yards and 81 touchdowns, and was named most valuable player in the AstroTurf NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.
2008 - No QB taken
2009 - Garrett Gilbert - Transferred to SMU and continued sucking.
2010 - Connor Wood (****) - Transferred to Colorado and sucked.
2010 - Case McCoy (***) - Sucks
2011 - David Ash (***) - Improved considerably since last year, may continue to improve, but no world beater.
2012 - Connor Brewer (****) - Who knows.
2013 - Tyrone Swoopes (****) - Bad evaluation again.

I just have no clue what they are doing. Did Swoopes even win a game this year? Why are they not all over Kenny Hill or Barrett like stink on shit? Both guys could probably start next year for them.

At some point it's not just the evals, it's what they are teaching.
USMC- Breaking shit since 1775
I don't know what you are talking about a few weeks back David Ash was a Heisman candidate.
Mack reads recruiting websites. I think he honestly looks at stars more than film. As long as he brings in highly rated players the boosters are satisfied.
Recruiting Colt for them was huge. 3 star recruit who played at a very high level.
I know he is the enemy but you have to give credit where credit is due.
Because there is a possibility they can not get those guys, and we all know Mack doesnt lose head to head recruiting battles.
Your logic is boggling my mind
My brother in law is head coach in the Dallas area and has had several lb recruited to tu. said they were way over evaluated (and bust). Said that TCU has the best evaluation process and Dave Beaty is a machine.
True, however this brings up an interesting point....Since they were both 3 stars who performed well, If Colt was in the position JFF was last Saturday, could win the heisman etc..., and he tweaks his knee like JFF did, how does he respond? I bet his body language is horrible and he doesn't return to the game, but thats just me.
Now go look at our qbs over the same period.
The only highly recruited guy was Steve McGee. Other than that they were 2 stars(Tanny) or 3stars.
It's more developmental in Austin than talent! Gilbert is the exception, he was/is horrible but anyone in the country would have taken him at the time!
Most fans with any sort of football knowledge know this. They just won't admit it to an Aggie.
In reality, their RB evals have been equally bad since Jamaal Charles. Bergeron and/or Gray may prove otherwise, but they aren't there yet.
I also agree that it is not all evaluation. Plenty of teams want many of the same guys. There is a lack of development issue as well.
Reggie was an athlete, but he was pretty high ranked

When Bryan Harsin said Monday that David Ash would have to compete for the starting job if healthy, the door to the Longhorns quarterback woes was reopened.
