With the offense getting so much attention it is easy to over look the improvement in the defense this year. The defense seemed to get better and better culminating in a great effort in the Cotton Bowl. Congrats, defense.
I agree. It's easy to overlook how dominant they were for most of the season.
The defensive stats at the end of the season dont really show how good they were because most of the games we played were over by half time or mid-3rd quarter so we had in our backups and teams were in hurry-up/ pass mode, trying to play catch-up.
On paper we might not look like it, for the reasons mentioned above, but the reality was that our starters were right up there with the top half or top 3rd of the SEC. Even against an OU team that had the kind of personnel to take advantage of our perceived defensive weakness, we held them to 13 points (all in the first half). This is a OU team that put up 60+ on TU and scored averaged 40+ per game.
Snyder has been fantastic. This defense has been a 3-4 defense for the past how many years??? And he came in and moved to a 4-3 base, with marginal (at best) talent that didnt necessarily fit his scheme, and turned it into a top 25 defense... (again not top 25 on paper/stats but if you watched our games you knew we were in that coversation of top 25 level) Holding Bama to 29 and OU to 13, down the stretch is impressive and few teams have/could do that.
Our defensive stats will never be tops because of our style of offense and how many possessions our opponents get. Considering what stir8ag said (starters getting pulled) and our up tempo O we did an excellent job this year. Only bad game was La Tech. We will have a great defense when you can pull the starters and still not give up any TDs. This class will help us in that regard.
I agree 100%. They get overshadowed by this offense. Alot of teams have put 40+ on OU but only one other(ND) held them to 13.
USMC- Breaking shit since 1775
