Football is all that matters

  • El Burro said...

We should not sacrifice football for the sake of other sports, no question. But I'm not comfortable accepting failure at other sports because "football is all that matters."

I don't think that's the point that sherm was originally trying to make though. He was trying to point out that it appears we're putting resources into our other sports at the expense of our football program. Let's face it, we don't put as much into our football program as much as we should. Everyone wants us to have success in all sports but it's pretty clear that the way we're doing it now isn't working. We need to put more resources in football, most wouldn't disagree with that.

You get tshirt money from being dominant in football IN TEXAS

tu doesnt get tshirt money from bball or baseball. They dont get tshirt money from Roger Clemens, kevin durant, tj ford, etc. they get money from VY, Ricky, Cedric Benson, Derrick Johnson, Brian Orakpo, Mack Brown, etc.

A&M will never be a basketball school no matter how good we are. We will never get the money back to justify investing that much money in the sport. Even when we were goid the students barely came. Same with baseball. More people were more excited for a fucking scrimmage than a top 10 baseball matchup

Whether it's wrong or right, football draws money and revenue which can be used to help out other sports. We're coming off of a 7-6 season and have already sold out all the seats. I understand part of the is the excitement about the SEC move but how often do we see basketball or baseball sell out one game, let alone a whole season?

Exactly. I don't want to suck at other sports. But if that's what it takes for a few years while we pour money into football, then so be it. Winning at football will bring more money for football, as well as for other sports

    shermanager11

  • Football will take care of itself now that we have made a committment to beat the best. Just keeping up with the 2nd teir teams in the Big 12- has been the focus or just to win a Conference Championship, well those aren't adequate goals for a School with the size and academic stature of aTm. If you don't think perception isn't important then you will fail in business, as selling your image is 1/2 the battle. I'm not saying Football isn't King and isn't the most important win, but how are you going to get there with the floundering this AD has had since we fired (complete dumbass thing to do) Jackie. That was a perception thing as well as a backstab and set the School back. It allowed the good ole boy system to flourish for nearly 20 years and look what we are trying to overcome. The cycle of power that tu has held for 15 years is crumbling and fortunately we are better off from Byrne's regime than before in terms of donations, how much are most of you giving per year to bitch, fan support by attending games, and saying give up to the Almighty football. Well the donations can be assigned to the p[lace you want and there are big money people who have given 6 and 7 figures to what they want, not football. I understand your focus, but if the people with the money don't see it your way guess who is going to win; do you seriously think they give a rat's ass as to your priorities.

Make a donation a make it specific, like for Kyle field, the Bright Center, etc to take the burden off the budget and help, but rest assured the big money will continue to make their own choice. With that said there are pledges in place and spending is going to increase and had to be in place when we made the move, most aren't privy to the specifics and what increases are coming. Big money does realize what the situation is and they are working to make the necessary changes to fight the fight.

    iatggs

  • Well I'm in school so I can't make any donations. And I know you can make donations with specific instructions on how you want it spent, but that has nothing to do with how the AD assigns the budget

I don't know about the rest of you, but I was perfectly happy when we dominated the SWC in football and sucked in basketball. I didn't even know, or care, that we had a track team, golf team, etc.

  • Good debate here and didn't read it all even, but all I'll say in case it hasn't been said, 5 years straight of NCAA tourney in bball while missing or sucking in mediocre bowls, couldn't fill seats at Reed, and the coach left, that doesn't happen in football whether or not u win

Your logic is boggling my mind

All the other sports are nice, but they will always be secondary. Football is the Lamborghini. Basketball, baseball, etc is getting the upgraded one with the navigation system. No one gives a shit that your Lamborghini has a navigation system--you have a freakin Lamborghini

I truely hope that makes you feel better.

  • It's too bad that A&M football has very little actual history of winning at an extremely high level.

  • The fact is the very large majority of the United States of America does not care if you are top 10 in baseball or go to the CWS

They dont care if you are good in basketball unless you are a blue blood

Even the average Aggie gave zero shits about the womens bball or track championships

They might have did the Tiger Woods pump for a couple minutes but they went on living their lives. MIGHT being the key word.

I get how to market yourself but Americans wont buy your shit if ESPN barely spends anytime covering it.

Football is king in Texas, the south, and America

Us junkies are in the small, very small minority of the fanhood

  • This is 1 of the reasons tu grads LTFAO at aTm. They think on the grand scale and want to stick in in everybodies ass at everything. Talked to my older brother's SIL and G-son (both tu grads) who said this is why they are great, because they can beat us at anyhting and everything. Winning is the only option, finishing 2nd at anything is no better than last place.

The really comical side of all this pissing and moaning (a female trait because they have 2 sets of lips) is some with the most vocal arguments aren't even the 1's footing the bill with donations in the 4 figures and nearly matching amounts for tickets. It's like my 2 brother's and I, when you have been donating for 30-40 years then talk to us about what you want and we'll be happy to listen, but for now we'll make our pledges and support what we want. I played football, played baseball, ran track, and played golf in High School going to the State Tourney my last 2 years so I have a great interest in Golf. Let me assure you I will continue to support what I want with how much I want until you finish your 5-6 years then have to work your way up to get that money to be a donor. I will admit football is #1 in my book but winning at everything is just as important to me as being a 1hit wonder.

    iatggs

  • Yes its important to you. You does not mean the other 99% of fans who do not pay for a internet recruiting service but buys shit off of wal mart shopping centers gives a shit.

tu gets its money off merchandising. Merchandising it gets from putting a lot of shit out and hoping it sticks. It also helps that they are the flagship university of this great state no matter how many times you say we are better. It also helps that they have won a MNC, multiple conference championships and multiple top 10 finishes in FOOTBALL. The average fan, shit the average Texas alumni cant name you how many times they made the Sweet 16 or Elite 8 or how many times they made the CWS

These are the facts of the situation

You market to your majority. Majority loves football in the state of Texas. ESPN lays down a lot more money and gives more coverage to football more than any other sport. Majority loves them some ESPN and respects what they say.

  • When you walk in a Wal Mart, Target, Academy, Dick's, etc why do you think you see over 75% of the college merchandise being burnt orange

and do you see any of the burnt orange merchandise saying basketball or baseball on it? No. Most likely it will say FOOTBALL.

When you walk on campus or go to 6th street in Austin, do you see everyone get pumped up drunk and rowdy for a basketball and baseball games? Probably not. Its probably the same reaction you see on this campus. Apathetic and nonchalant. Just something to do when you are bored. Just how many people go to a track and field meet here or a golf tournament?

Man all those championships have helped our image dont ya say? That womens bball 'ship was awesome.......for me to poop on. Because less than 1% of the population gave a crap about it. 99% of the population dont think it should even be a sport and Title 9 is ruining college athletics.

  • First of all, tu can't beat us in anything and everything. Well I guess they COULD but it's not like we don't beat them in all sports just as much as they beat us. So your relatives need to find a reason to laugh at us. And I love that we're good at all those sports, that's not my point. A lot of people on this thread don't understand that I'm not saying we should give up on every other sport. Donate to whatever the hell you want, that's your choice. I'm talking about the athletic BUDGET, which has nothing to do with donations.

That being said, if we sweep tu in baseball and you talk shit to a sip, what's the response you're going to get 99.9% of the time? "Yeah well we beat your ass in football."
