I love Houston. Its the city that shouldn't be. Its a zombie city. There is absolutely no reason a city built on a swamp, specifically designed to attract a capitol that was put in a different city, filled with a population constantly torn on social and cultural issues should have survived multiple oil busts and bad economies... but it has. There is a spirit in this town that is really weird. The name "Hustle Town" is perfect, because everyone hustles, everyone works, everyone pushes and innovates. You see it everywhere. Take "Fitzgerald's." One of the city's original punk venues, it went into complete disarray during the late 90s early 2000s. Total dump, couldn't attract anyone worth a damn. But it was bought by some very enterprising guys who have made it a super hip spot for up and coming acts to play an intimate venue. Also, these guys teamed with the "Houston Press" (a great, free, independent newspaper) to start the FreePressSummerFest which has quickly become one of the hottest music festivals in the country. I went this year and the vibe was electric... it was the coolest thing I had ever seen in Houston. I've spent most of my life here (absent my glory days in Aggieland), and the change I've seen in the last five years has been epic. New top-notch restaurants, a burgeoning art, music and theater scene and urban renewal that seemed unbelievable (the Heights is finally turning over!- Its been "turning over" for the last 30 years). Considering the desperate situation most people suffer through in this Country these days, life in Houston is pretty damn good, and only getting better.
