Houston CBS TV: "Sumlin to be hired within 24 hours"

HOUSTON (CBS Houston) - For the second time in four years, Texas A&M’s national search for a football coach has ended 115 miles down the road in Houston.
This time sources are confirming to 610 AM radio that University of Houston head coach Kevin Sumlin will be named to replace Mike Sherman in the next 24 hours.
Sumlin’s 12-0 and sixth-ranked Cougars are playing Southern Miss in the Conference USA Championship game on Saturday. Should the Cougars prevail they will earn their first trip to a BCS bowl game. It’s unclear whether or not Sumlin will coach the Cougars in their bowl game.
Sumlin has been linked to both the Arizona State and A&M jobs this week, but ASU apparently pulled out Friday once it became obvious Sumlin was taking the Aggies job.
Four years ago, Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne conducted a national search to replace Dennis Franchione and returned with Sherman, who was the Houston Texans offensive coordinator at the time, within 72 hours.

There are valid concerns with sumlin but using todays game as your talking point is dumb. Again, he's by no means a guarantee, but the guy has a good chance of succeeding here.

I understand frustration, but you can't judge the guy based on one bad game.
Sherm got canned because of an undisciplined season. Can't judge this guy based on one bad day by his players. The right staff will make all the difference in the world.

Very surprising. I like Sumlin, but not for our HC now. On the plus side, he has Texas ties for recruiting. Presumably, he could get plugged in, bring an OC and keep the core strengths of the current staff. I would have preferred SEC pedigree with Strong or Smart in that order. I don't think the UH offense will get it done in the SEC and our defense isn't there either.
Frankly, keeping Sherman another year would have been better than this.

I hope I'm wrong and will support whoever we hire.
He better hire some bad ass recruiters and a damn good defensive coordinator.

The only coach on staff worth keeping is Jim Turner.

He didn't invent that offense and has coached more in pro set types. I don't think he would use the same offense at A&M if he is hired.
And no, another year of Sherman would not be better.

Its my understanding that Sherman was controlling things on both sides of the ball overriding defense as well. We have some great position coaches.
Freeze, Strong are both guys that can turn the reigns over to the guys under them they hired. Sumlin 12-0 could be a large part of #1 schedule #2 Holgerson, Kingsbury and product of Keenum. #3 could be the guy and deserves the credit

Just to be clear, I'm just posting what the TV station said. Could end up true, but I've rarely found TV stations to have the best info on college football.
