Houston.. err.. SEC we have a problem (not for the weak stomach)

  • Spring 2012 DL Composition

    LSU (4-3)
Average 267.2 lbs on the DL
15 scholarship DL on roster this spring
4*s and 5*s on the DL
    2 x 300+ lb DTs on roster

    Ark (4-3)
Average 272.6 lbs on the DL
19 scholarship DL on roster this spring
    5 x 300+ lb DTs on roster

    Ole Miss (4-3)
Average 288.3 lbs on the DL
13 scholarship DL on roster this spring
    3 x 300+ lb DTs on roster

    TAMU (4-3)
A&M averages 266.5 lbs on the DL
A&M has 8 scholarships DL on roster this spring
Taking Rhonte Scales out of the equation as he'll never contribute to our program, we have zero DTs at or over 286 pounds. Rephrasing this, we don’t have one 300 pounder on the DL
    0 x 300+ lb DTs on roster
    A&M can't field a 3 deep on the DL
A&M did NOT sign any JUCO DL for immediate help for Fall 2012
A&M has ZERO 4* scholarship DL player brought in from the TX HS ranks.
A&M has one 4* DL on roster from HS ranks (Robinson). Zero 5* recruits

To sum this statistical analysis up, we have the least amount of DL from a quantity standpoint heading into ’12 and the lightest group in average weight across the board. From a quality standpoint, we have one 4* DL recruit on roster (non starter; not from TX) and only one returning starter from ’11 season who played OLB and is now a converted DE.

Why on earth Sumlin changed from a 3-4 to a 4-3 for the inaugural year in the SEC is beyond me. Flabbergasted to put it lightly. I don't have a crystal ball and I really hope to see our program succeed, but if Sumlin is sacked after year 3, you can absolutely bet it’s because of the defense and the lack of commitment and priority on that side of the ball.

PS – you would kick your dog when you get home if I put t.u.’s metrics on here for comparison. But since we’re going to the SEC, I kept the sample sets and population SEC only.

    gig'em?

  • How many of the LSU, Arkansas and Ole Miss DL will never contribute to their program?
If you're taking guys out of our equation, you have to take it out of theirs as well.

  • So you're saying that Sherman did a shitty job recruiting D-lineman?

    We should fire him immediately!

    Hugh Honey

  • He changed to a 4-3 for that exact reason, Benny.

We have a bunch of guys in the 260-280s range, but zero of the super-heavy guys.

  • It doesn't help that our DE's are converted OLB's. I'm sure the coaches plan for them to gain weight.

Everybody that is realistic already knew that the only way Sumlin would win games in his first two years is by outscoring his opponents in a high-scoring game. But if Benny wasn't so singularly obsessed with comparing A&M to other defensive-minded schools he would see that Arkansas and Auburn's success has only come in shoot-outs as well.

tap the breaks. Auburn has a defensive minded HC. While they have a spread concept offense, they play football with a defensive mentality. They play football from the inside out, whereas Sumlin is trying to play football from the outside in. Even the great offensive minded Urban Meyer constructed his Florida teams the exact same way. unlike Sumlin, Meyer knew what he was up against in the SEC and built his defense up right out of the chutes and never looked back. Does this make any sense to you guys??

trying to help here Ags. i'll get to your PMs here in a second. thanks.

    Good God no! Please no!

  • What was the point of taking Rhontae Scales out of the equation? Was that just so you could make our average weight come in less than LSU's? How many of the 15 DT's at LSU, 19 at Ark, and 13 at Ole Miss will never contribute? What are the numbers for the other 10 SEC schools or even just the other 4 on our schedule next year?

Stupid post. We all know there is work to do on defense.

Meyer was there for years. Sumlin's been here for a solid 4-5 months. He signed who he could out of the last class, coming in late in the year, and this one will be his to screw up. He's going to have to work harder than meyer did to fortify the line, but give the man a chance to sign some players.

I don't disagree with any points you've made other than "knowing" that sumlin will fail and that he messed up by switching to 2 undersized DTs and 2 DEs on the line rather thank keeping 3 undersized DTs on the line with a weak LB core behind it in a power running and mammoth-sized OL league.

Maybe posting's just not your game. I know, let's have a spelling contest.

  • oh my gosh!!

you mean DL ISN'T looking as a "strength" for us next season!?!!

who would have POSSIBLY known this!?!!

thanks Barney, you're SOOOO freakin insightful

  • And in the 2013 class...

300 lbs (Top 100 national recruit)
    282 lbs (3* that could/will eventually be a 4*)
6'4 245 lb DE with a big frame

And we're offering every JUCO DL worth a damn... Do we really think Sumlin doesn't realize this is a big time need?

Sherman had two JUCO monsters on the DL and neither qualified. Sumlin came in with about 2 weeks before signing day and part of that time was a dead period... What did you want him to do? Wiggle his nose and make kids fall in love with him and the defense they've never seen?

    tcmay

  • I think it's pretty much accepted that the defense will be subpar for the next couple of seasons. I'm all for a good bashing of our team bc we bring it on ourselves, but Sumlin just got here 4 months ago. This roster would have looked pretty much the exact same if Sherman or if any other coach was here. There's a reason(s) why Sherm failed here (Poor defensive recruiting and playcalling). Right now Sumlin is doing a better job at landing good DL as opposed to Sherman when he first got here.

Sumlin will have to win early by having a great offense. Not good. Great. Our offense is light years ahead of the defense talent wise. Once (hopefully) we start winning, we will be able to land the stud defensive players that have been going to tu the past 13 years. Give it some time.
