Is the SEC ready

  • For Sumlin and KK's offense. This isn't smash mouth football. This is I'll pick you apart or put you in the wrong position and capitalize on your mistakes. Like novacaine...give it time...always works. By no means am I saying we are going to score 100 points. This is a damn good conference. I think we win a couple that we shouldn't if we can gel together this year offensively. We win those couple and we hold on to a couple of borderline recruits that may be worried about the Aggies competing in te SEC.

    Discuss please

  • Rests firmly on showers shoulders. We need him to step up. If he has a decent season, and our defense is decent, we will surprise a lot of people

  • I feel ya Sherm! I can agree with you.

  • Thinking about the LSU vs WVU, LSU vs Oregon games 2011, WVU and Oregon committed more penalties and more turnovers.

I think allot of our season will depend on how disciplined we play, on both sides of the field

  • The SEC is known for smash mouth run O & attack the line of scrimmage D. Any legit, difficult to defend O that comes along will cause problems for the establishment (SEC) because they cannot practice against themselves every week. It forces them into a plan B that historically has not been a requirement for weekly game day preparation. SEC

  • We scored a shitload on Arkansas (a BCS team) with Sherman's shitty offense, so I think we'll be able to put up points. The greater question is... "Can we stop the run?"

You can't rewrite history. Sherman's offense was not anywhere close to shitty

  • Questionable calls, yes. Tended to abandoned the run early, yes. But still one of the best offenses the past couple years

    shermanager11

  • Sherman's offense wasn't shitty at all. What the hell? But yes I think it's all on Showers. He has to be good.

  • It stalled out too much. Put the defense in too many bad situations. Seemed to run perfect until we needed a crucial third down conversion. As shermanager said: (very) questionable playcalls. Receivers couldn't get separation. Multiple crucial drops... Thats not a good offense to me.

  • It still ranked tops in the nation in pretty much every category. Sherman wouldn't be the OC at Miami if he was a shitty offensive coach

Agreed. The reason Sumlin's spread will be more effective is (a) it's simpler in scheme and therefore easier for college athletes with limited practice time to execute and (b) it uses the short passing game more often, allowing for easy yards and the ability for YAC's.

Mike Leach talks a lot about how the key to his offense was execution. That's why Leach, Kingsbury and Holgerson have an 8.5X11 play card. There are only a few different plays run out of a myriad of formations. But by only having a certain number of plays, execution is perfected.

Plus superior athletes in the backfield should be a difference maker. I'm not as concerned about Showers as I am about our receivers. Their ability (or not) to get open and catch the ball will allow our real weapons, Michael, Williams and Williams (hopefully) to score a ton of points.

I'm hoping he shows us what Andre Ware saw and talked about on College Football Live.

  • I think you have a great OL and great RB. WR are good. I think success will depend upon Showers. If he can build some confidence early, I think it will help. The good news is your OL will give him time to throw. But a lot rest on his shoulders

  • I've got a severe case of the lolzies after reading this thread.

Is the SEC ready? You bet your maroon balls they're ready. Haha, good Lord.

This is what I wonder about- our defense will be practicing against a spread O every week, but playing against pro style O's most weekends

  • My balls are more of the peach colored type when shaved. My blood is maroon though and I'm pretty cock strong. A South Carolina Cock at work told me he pisses on his balls all the time. He probably has yellow balls.

  • This is going to be a fun year to watch. I'm looking forward to it. I think we'll even do pretty well.

However we do have weaknesses ...

    1) When Mike Leach implemented the Air Raid offense in Lubbock, Kingsbury struggled a lot his first year. Look for much of the same from Showers this year. There is a lot of pressure on the QB to make the right decision every time. If Showers doesn't pick up the knack, it will be a very long season. If he does, it still might be a long season. Look for a bunch of interceptions this year, but next year he'll be in better shape. That's one huge benefit to our young stable of QBs.

    2) Our biggest weakness is our depth. Running back is basically the only place we are deep. That's good, but when the injuries start to pile up like they always do, look for big places that other teams can exploit.

    3) Our receivers will be a weakness until they prove otherwise. They must catch the ball.

    4) The defense must learn to speed-read this summer. All we need is for them to pick up their third new defense in 5 years, memorize it, and play it perfectly. Heck, anyone should be able to do it.

A&M had very good running backs most of Sherman's tenure. Cyrus Gray, Christine Michael and Mike Goodsoon were/are nothing to sneeze at.

I was referring to the comparison of RB's in this new A&M spread offense with what Leach and Holgerson had to work with at Tech and WV.

One of the 247's format drawbacks is it's difficult to follow a posting response.
