Linebacker Question

  • Alright, I am trying to break down our LB haul and figure out what else we need or want to complete the puzzle. Chevis and Claiborne seem to be big bruising run stuffing specialists. Chevis more pure bulk, Claiborne just tenacious and hard hitter, but both MIKE backers. Ranking the 2, I get that Claiborne is better at covering sideline to sideline but both struggle at pass coverage. Now we have Wade there too, and from what I remember he will become a WILL backer, so I guess the coaches think he has the agility and lateral movement to cover the slot receivers which is good enough for me. I just ask because all are listed as ILB's. So the big question is who fills the SAM spot? A guy like Prevot is a great pass rusher or WDE if he can add weight, but if he moves back to LB does he have the skills to cover TE's or a slot receiver? Then there's Hollins, what is his specialty? How are his cover skills and can he plug his gap on run plays a SAM? Along with the MIKE backers we are also looking at Williams and the savage. Obviously the savage will find room anywhere if he wants to come but is Williams versatile enough to play something else or bulk and spin down to a DE or something? If by some chance we start looking better for Mitchell or Stevenson or Benjamin out of Florida or Skai Moore where do they fit as linebackers? I honestly don't know the rest of these kids well enough to know what positions we are recruiting them for.

We will probably know more throughout the season but any light can be shed would be great to help me better understand the positions and players for the positions. Feel free to correct any misrepresented information stated above as well. TIA

  • We're not playing against pass 1st offenses any longer. It's a lot more important to have run stuffing tacklers than guys that are oversized safeties. You get corners and safeties that can cover man and let the LB's do what they were originally designed.

  • That the reason we are getting larger safeties like Wiggins and Washington I presume.

  • Claiborne is going to play on the outside. But great post.

    thaferrett

  • ^ Ferrett is right. Wade is the guy that ahs the instincts and can play sideline to sideline. The unique thing I see in our recruiting is we are loading positions with guys that have very distinct skills, not just a "good" let's say ILB. My look is that on 3rd and 16 you will see the speed team in the game, whereas on 1st and 10 it will be the guys that could mount a pass rush but are superior at movivng the LOS back to thwart the running game. I'd just about bet you will see some run blitzes this year, which will be something long missing from our D.

    Tora, tora, tora.

  • Claiborne will play will or Sam. Wade is a will and chevis obviously a mike.

Prevot is a de all the way. I wouldnt worry to much about the rest as its anyones guess who we will get for thr last lb.

  • Thanks bob. It's nice to have the 3 spots locked up with these guys. Add the next one or 2 LB studs and we are looking a lot better at depth in the next few years.

Try containing the Trent Richardson type of attacks within the SEC with simple man-cover type safeties and you'll get demolished. That good wood has gotta get layed consistently from the strong safety position. Trent Richardson benches 425 lbs and runs 4.5.

That's not exactly what I meant...but you damn sure can't have safeties that bench 225 7 times...
