***Official Player Draft Vote Thread***

  • Hamm's Take

Many of you will look at Bloom’s backfield and be WOWED by the star power. That’s fine. It’s natural to think “Oh man, Bloom has C-Mike and B-Will?!”. You will also look at Bloom’s solid offensive line and think he will just smash it down my throat. Don't be fooled by those small details because it's the body of work that I argue you all look closely at. In other words, “Not so fast my friend!”

One important thing to note is C-Mike’s hands out of the backfield. They can be questionable at times. He’s a downhill runner who’s skills are not best utilized out of the shotgun. Bloom can have a good backfield but he can't throw it to those two guys every play. Look at my secondary, it’s LOADED. Not to mention, his receiving core is mediocre at best. Showers is the better quarterback right now but he’s not leaps and bounds better than the Kirville-Tivy TEXAS LEGEND that is Johnny Football. It’s not like he took Tannehill and I was left with the back-ups. Manziel can run this offense and my back up, Matt "Mr. Arlington Colt" and "5-A Player of the year" Joeckel can distribute the ball to all my playmakers on offense if I need him in case Johnny went down.

Let’s look at my offense. SPEED is the only word that comes to mind. I can run a two-back set that can get up field quicker than Bloom’s unit. Next, lets look at my dominating receiving core in Swope, L. Williams, Mike Evans and Brandal Jackson?!!!. Remember, his secondary is weak. He’s got an inexperienced corner in Jacobs and a non-aggressive counterpart in Harris.

Speaking of the secondary, I have the more talented safety core in Howard Matthews and Johntel Franklin. Both are starters right now.

Let’s give credit to my D-Line for being a solid group. Some could argue that I have the more conditioned group to combat the up-tempo offense. Nealy is the best A&M defensive lineman right now, hands down. Anyone who’s actually seen this team practice this spring can’t argue that fact. Next, you could make an argument that Ivan Robinson has made tremendous strides since camp started and is better than Ennis right now. Stansbury, at 6-4, 265, will be in the two deep next season and Shayvion Hatten has a ton of talent.

Next, I will point to my LB core in the middle with Jenkins and Stewart and their to ability to stuff the run. Again, another position group where I have the edge. You add aggressive corners on the outside (the top two corners on the roster) in run support and I think the run game won’t be much of a threat. Did anyone see Floyd's hit on Brandon Williams on Friday? I rest my case. I can also play a multiple look because I can bring in Hurd and play a dime package. Bloom is vanilla.

The most important part is that I have key leaders on both sides of the ball. Marcell Yates has talked over and over about Jonathan Stewart’s football IQ and leadership and Ryan Swope is the senior leader on offense. Lastly, defense and team speed wins championships and I clearly have the better of those two key components. Do the right thing and vote Hamm the winner of today’s draft.

    Bloom's Take

First off, it should be noted that I asked Hamm for a "paragraph" defending his team and he sent like a 2,000 word defense of his picks. That alone should tell you how much justifying his team needs. I'll keep this fairly short and sweet. I agree with Hamm, you'll look into my backfield and be "WOWED," and you know why? Because you should be. I have the teams best two backs running behind what will likely be four of the starting offensive linemen. I have the team's best quarterback, the team's best short yardage receiving threat (Lamothe) and a deep and talented receiving corps with a lot of options.

On the defensive side, Hamm is working with Nathan Gutekunst and a defensive linemen on the offensive line against two ultra-athletic pass rushers in Brandon Alexander and Damontre Moore. I also have the two best defensive tackles in Mathis and Ennis. I don't want to hear about what someone did in one scrimmage on one night, look at the body of work there. In addition, if I didn't already have the two best pass rushers in Moore and Alexander, I definitely have it with Sean Porter as well. It's going to be sack city back there. I'll grant that my secondary isn't great, but with Dustin Harris (who will be a starter this fall), Tremaine Jacobs (who's improving each day), Steven Terrell and Steven Campbell, I have a solid unit back there. We've seen Johnny Manziel throw under pressure, it's not pretty.

Don't overcomplicate the issue here. The only real debate is what song Hamm should be singing at Karaoke next week.

Note: We'll keep the vote open for 48 hours

  • Sorry Hamm, still gotta stick with Aubrey

  • I gotta give the nod to Bloom, love two headed monster on O and the two terrors off the edge on D with Porter and Alexander.

  • I've seen what a "powerful" offense does to a tough D. Oregon vs LSU. Defense wins 95 out of 100 times. Nod too Hamm on this one.

  • For me it comes down to the offensive line and pass rush ability. A good pass rush (See Von 2010) makes all the difference. Bloom takes it.

I like Aubrey's D better too though. You can say what you want about Bloom's secondary being inferior, but Dustin Harris has started for three years and Tremaine Jacobs tore it up in JUCO. Floyd and Deshazor are completely unproven. I also like Campbell as the second safety a lot better than Franklin

  • Can't wait to hear Hamm singing TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART, cuz Aubs just took this one.

Put your heart into Hamm. I don't want something half assed.

  • I keep writing a winner and changin my mind. So I'll just help the underdog and go with Hamm and no explanation. Every time I try to explain one the other has just as many good points

  • Why does Hamm's defense have Hatten at DE and Stansbury at DT? Think those should be reversed.

I was originally going to go with Bloom on this one, but I like Hamm's D too much. Lockdown corners, plus the nickel in Hurd, and the 2 starting safeties right now make me believe that Bloom with not get many passing yards and will be forced to run against the size of Hatten, Stansbury, and Nealy.

  • Well done boys, I love how well both of your defenses match up against the opposing offense.

Hamm walks Howard into the box with Franklin playing centerfield and that is a lot of beef in the box to stop the run.

Bloom has the pass rushers and speed on D to keep manziel and co. in check.

Unfortunately, this game IMO would end up being a microcosm of our season to come. Hamm's speedy, high powered offense is not able to keep up with the ball controlling, power running attack of Bloom. Although they create some big plays to keep it close, Bloom rides the legs of Williams, Cmike, and even Showers behind a veteran oline, to victory.

  • Hamm would win. Put Howard in the box to neutralize the running attack. his WR will run circles around Blooms DBs. plus he has Ben M and Randolph catching wheel routes out of the back field. 10 point victory by the Hammster.

  • I don't think Hamm's o-line would hold up against Bloom's d line. Either one of Moore or Alexander would come off the edge on guntkuntz every single time.

Starts and ends on the lines for me.

    Bloom. 36
    Hamm 18

Ps no one drafted a kicker so I assume no pats...

    Correct, no special teams

  • This was a really cool feature. It would be fun if the mods on Hookem did something like this.

I doubt you guys care for a 'Horn's opinion, but the stout secondary/sketchy OL/inexperienced QB situation reminds me a lot of the 2010 Texas team. And God knows no one wants to see that again. (Before you flame me for daring to compare anyone to Gilbert, I'm not comparing individual players... just the overall situation.)

My imaginary vote would go to Bloom.

I somewhat agree with this. The difference being Ryan Swope: a proven, productive WR the will bail out our young QB when he scrambles.

  • No way Gutekunst can block BA. I think he'll be in the backfield all day. Game is won in the trenches. I am going Bloom. He can easily control the clock with his running game and keep Hamm's more explosive O off the field.

Lot closer than I originally thought when following the draft, but Bloom's team would win.

  • BigPoppaJ

  • Bloom, it was close though but I think his secondary is good enough to allow plenty of pressure on the qb, and don't think Jenkins and Stewart can slow his run game down enough with the oline he drafted

Your logic is boggling my mind
