Re-watching the game

  • Around the 14:00 mark of the 2nd we have 1st and 10.

    Trips to the wide side of the field (left side)
    Malena offset to the right
    Evans on the short side (right)
    They are in a three man front

    What happens?

    We run a zone read.

    Luke seals off his man.
    Swope in the slot heads for the olb.
    McNeal gets inside leverage a seals off his DB.
    Backside didn't crash & Johnny didn't give.
    Perfect running lane for Malena for at least 10-15 yards.
    DB on Evans comes rushing in because Johnny has the ball.
    Johnny pumps.
    DB leaves his feet.
    Johnny tosses to Money Mike for a 7 yard play.
    Money Mike gets up with a grin, "What the heck just happened?"

    He should have gave to Malena, but he kept it and still got positive yardage. He's hard to judge and you have no clue what he is going to do. A designed run turned into a pass play.

    Three plays later he misses a wide open EZ for a long td strike. Two plays later it is 3rd and 10 am he takes it to the house for 37 yards. In that same play McNeal was wide arse open because his man tripped up. Johnny got flushed out quick and had to tuck it and run. If this doesn't happen McNeal gets an easy td.

    Scheme all you want, but it really is hard.

    I just ate some more crow for about 10 minutes looking at this little play drive.

  • I get so pissed off at how horrible the officiating was. Johnny's td was so obvious Ray freakin' Charles could've called it right!

  • Baylor (I know, I know...) ran that play with RG3 a lot where the receiver was an option on the zone read. Manziel also ran it at Tivy.

    It's a triple option out off a zone read play.

    Good way to stop a zone read is to let the end chase the back and crash the corner. This is the response to it.

    First saw this about 4 years ago at the HS level and loved it.
