Running Blog: SEC Media Day (Kevin Sumlin 1:00)

  • Hit up the AD and see if they are going to sell media guides to the public. If not, snag me one and I will pay a little extra for it.

  • I'll see what I can find out on the media guide front.

We're about 25 minutes away from Slive time. I'm here in the main press room so I'll be posting notes here on the board as we go along. Who knows what Slive may or may not say so this should be interesting.

  • Not going to lie, this is a bit surreal being in here with the SEC media.

  • Also, apparently the Aggies players are wearing cowboy boots. I like it.

  • Not sure if this helps but Alabama's media guides are usually available through the unversity's website or we can buy them at the bookstores. I buy mine at Books A Million every year. Not sure if there is a Books A Million in Texas though.

There are a bunch here. Not sure if they'll carry them though, but maybe. They carry a lot of the football magazines.

  • Mike Slive Running Notes

Been on the job for ten years. First thing was doing presentation at SEC media days even though he had never been to campus before.

    - Doesn't ussually spend time looking back. But wanted to touch on some successes of the last ten years.

    - Ten years ago wanted to improve academic performance, maintain competitive success, fulfill responsibility to ensure diversity and opportunity and securing future financial security. Made progress in all faster than expected.

    - Over the past ten years, the SEC has captures 62 national titles in 16 of the 20 sports sponsored. This year alone the SEC won 9 and had 7 runners up. Of those 9, five were won by women's teams. A tribute to student athletes and the commitment of the institutions.

    - One issue talked about ten years ago was lack of minority coaches, now have three in football and even more in basketball. It's a part of "who we are."

    - SEC's "Storied" on ESPN will continue for another year including one about Croome.

    - SEC has tackled infractions head on while maintaining competitive success.

  • - From 2002 to today, SEC has tripled annual revenue.

    - Must continue to be innovative.

    - Last year talked about the proposed national agenda for change.

    - SEC continues to advocate for change that benefits athletes. Majority of the SEC supports multi-year scholarships, want to increase amount of full scholarship to provide financial resources that meet full cost of attendance. Want to make it easier for former athletes to come back and finish degrees if they choose to.

  • - Clear message to being academic preperation in the ninth grade in order to ensure eligibility. NCAA is still working on simplifying the recruiting rules.

    - SEC wants to allow text messaging, changing model to a day model, and "things that count". Instead of things like media guides, letterhead, etc.

    - Last week's headlines remind us that we should all be ever vigilant. Open dialogue across all levels of administration. Necessary effective system of checks and balances. Especially for those that cannot protect themselves. No one program, no person, no matter how popular or successful can be allowed to derail the soul of an institution.

  • - 42 Academic All-Americans, the most of any conference.

    - of the 8 Top award for student athletes in both athletics, academics and contributions to the school, 3 were from the SEC.

    - SEC as strong as the classroom and the community as in competition.

    - continue to be astounded at the quality of kids in the classroom and on the field.

    - In 80 year history, A&M and Missouri are the third and fourth new members of the conference. Both AAU members and support broad based athletic programs with passionate fans.

    - The scheduling committee was able to get signature games on Sept 8th at both Missouri and A&M.

    - Not a single school didn't give up something to make this schedule work. Extraordinator excercise in cooperation.

    - SEC concluded third year of 15 year agreement with ESPN and CBS. SEC syndicated network reaches 80 million homes.

    - Talk about "Project SEC" is to provide greater access to fans for their favorite teams. Would love to say more, but won't, but will before we all get too much older.

    - SEC supports four team seeded playoff of the four best teams since 2004 Auburn was left out. Now it's happened. New format is good for the SEC and good for college football. Took six years to come together.

    - Getting started on time so they can't blame it on the new guy. Like the other 13 guys who will talk, the word excited is going to come out. A lot of reasons. First season in the SEC, fans and former students and current students are ready to get going. It's a special year and they're excited to get started. A&M is as excited as anybody to be part of the SEC and for the season to start. It's going to be a special time for the fans.

Looking at things, they asked if they realize they play all six last national champions, said yes, they knew it when they took the job. From a coaches and players standpoints, they have a lot of thigns to point to and work hard to get to. Players have gone through summer in a great way, and the players they brought are going to be big leaders. They worked out with the 5:45 AM group today so they didn't miss a workout to get on the plane for the trip here.

    - Is it real? It makes it real, but what made it real to him was the first head coaching meeting in the spring with the coaches and Slive and they close the door behind you. That's when you know it's real.

    - Quarterback situation at a new school? People forget that when he got to Houston it was a two quarterback system splitting time the year before. They went through spring football and most of fall camp before naming Keenum. Having been through it as a coach and a coordinator makes it a bit easier. Will say that you have to start somewhere, veteran quarterbacks all started somewhere. Have guys competing and feels good about their athletic ability and talent level at quarterback.

    - Adjusting the offense? Need to be bigger and faster (joking), I don't know. Been able to adapt and do things at Houston and other places to utilize personnel. People say they throw the ball all the time and he's okay with people thinking that. Run game percentages and stats have been pretty effective. Being called "pass happy" is fine with them as long as people want to defend the pass all the time. Will have a lot better feel in February than right now, watching video doesn't do them justice. Have respect for the talent level, but comfortable with how they do things.

    - Game with Florida? Most important game is Louisiana Tech. Have their plate full in the first game, but no doubt that the fans are excited about the home opener against Florida. Going to be a big game, to have your home opener at A&M be an SEC game is a big deal.

Moving kickoffs up? Been talk about concerns about injuries on kickoffs, not a fan of eliminating it. Something the fans like, the players enjoy, there's an art to it. For him he likes it because Houston tied a record for kickoff returns for touchdowns, it's the first offensive play and it's part of football.

    - QBs experience? Sometimes with young quarterbacks it's easier when you're bringing in a new system compared to a fourth or fifth year guy who's been in the same system and starting. Those guys didn't come to play for you. Even more difficult if they've had succes. But they've had a good comfort level with the young quarterbacks.

    - OOS recruiting? No doubt that they have an emphasis in the state of Texas. Numbers show that right now. No doubt that being in the SEC has increased footpring nationall and moving east. Moving into Louisiana and Mississippi, just looking recruiting over last 5 or 6 months they've gotten more visits and returned phone calls outside the state that may not have paid attention before the SEC.

  • - LSU on final week? One thing he's learned is that he doesn't have anything to do with scheduling. Will figure out what's going on. From a proximity standpoint, Louisiana is a neighboring state and they're in Texas recruiting, A&M is in Louisiana recruiting and as A&M becomes more competitive it becomes a game people look forward to it.

    - "It's a pretty damn hard league" - question about the SEC West - it's the combination of size and speed. Been a part of fast teams, but it's the size and speed in the SEC that's the difference maker. Also because of the coaching, some of the best coaches in the country are in the SEC.

    - Is the defense ready? Difficult to say at this point. Have a lot to overcome. Led the nation in sacks but 106th against the pass. Have to be more consistent across the board. Have to take some chances but can't have that big of a stat gap. Have to develop depth in the front, will have some young guys playing early on the defensive line. Moving to a 4-3 is a big deal. Changed the defense, changed the style, going to have to recruit to that style. Unfortunately they're going to have to get some young guys on the field early.
