I am looking into getting into sales in the Houston or BCS areas.
I'm unsure on how best to go about finding a position, so I figured I'd see if anyone had any knowledge or pointers on how to get started in the business.
If you have any advice or leads, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks guys. Sherm, I pm'd you back.
I am definitely looking on Indeed and Careerbuilder as well.
There are different boards for different industries.
I would recommend gaining connections with head hunters via LinkedIn.com. Type in "pharmaceutical recruiter" or "IT recruiter" or whatever specialty recruiter you like. I did this and got 800 results. Start emailing them a resume.
As mentioned above, if you have no sales experience copier sales are great for that. Shows tenacity and willingness to cut your teeth. I've also heard Enterprise car rental has great sales training. I've never been through it but that's the reputation.
Do you have a preference on what your looking to sell?
Spider, thanks. That is really helpful info.
Lonestar, I am honestly pretty open at this point to what I sell. I am just looking to get some experience and work my tail off to be successful. Pharmaceuticals and Oil and Gas would be great. I have heard that Pharmaceuticals is pretty saturated right now though.
Carson I think you have a great personality for sales and you will really enjoy it.
Wish I had some leads for you.
Its not really in the areas you mentioned previously but the Eagle Ford has really blown up recently south of SA. If you wanted to get into O&G there is probably a lot of opportunity down there for you. I don't have any contacts for you unfortunately but going that direction might help you get your foot in the door.
Pharma is a different industry than it was during its glory days. You can still make a lot of money but lots of good people are at home laid off. So it is saturated. It's also highly regulated now.
Oil and gas? Throw tobacco sales in there too and you will hit the trifecta of the most hated industries in US politics!
Isn't there an Aggie career website? My friend is always talking about some site that has tons of jobs listed. (and not jobsforaggies.tamu)
Thanks D2, I appreciate that.
Lonestar, also great info. I'll definitely look into that.
Learn how to cowboy and ill hire u on. Summer time day working! Beautiful memories.
My heroes have always been cowboys
I know a lot of folks in pharmaceutical sales and my family runs a staffing firm in houston pm me.
Plenty of opportunities in oil and gas. Try rigzone.com
ADP is a great place to start at too. Great training and it is very well received on a resume.
good job carson, you pulled out a first poster
One of the best ways to get a job, or if nothing else get some leads, is to post a Topic on Linkedin under the Association of Former Students group for whatever it is that you desire to get into. It emails everyone who is apart of the group, and that's actually how I landed my six fig job 4 months ago. I'm serious, it was the best thing I did. Landed me 7 interviews, and 2 offers... look into it. And good luck man, cause no matter how hard you try, it's still difficult to find a job that's more right for you, as opposed to you being right for the job.
My mom's friend recruits for a company called Paycom in Houston. They perform payroll services for companies, and I know that they want salespeople with little or no experience in order to train them their own way. The salesmen make bank from what I hear too, but the requirements and interview process are pretty demanding. If you want more info, let me know.
Definitely going to have to get a linked in profile up and running.
Weav and Chad, you have pm's from me.
Thanks again so much for the info fellas.
