  • I think pretty good numbers there. Still plenty of room to grow with success. I think will be able to keep asst salaries high, especially with coaching turnover as long as the program is successful.

    The 2 million buyout is what we would have to pay him to fire him before his contract is up correct?

    I agree. I think you want to leave some room to bump it up each year with more progress. A 50 percent raise it pretty nice after year one though.

  • If we want to keep him from schools like OU that are willing to pay 4.6, we gotta keep bumping him up. I hate that we couldn't do better here:

  • Its fine, we'll match anyone's offer if they come calling after next season.... because that will mean he did great again. Everyone roasted the last Administration because they were so quick to give unreasonable raises.

  • I understand we're willing to fight for him- guess I just think if we believe he's worth fighting for then we should compensate him well enough to avoid a bidding war.

    Anyone know if that buyout works both ways? Was hoping for a Briles-esq buyout

    I can see it both ways. His market value is probably greater than that, but I think he probably looks at as A&M is now paying $2 million more and three times as much as we was making just over a year ago and the school gave him the opportunity to increase his market value to begin with.

  • There are plenty of schools that would pay him more, but he's not going to have the same advantages at a lot of them as he has at A&M.

    Is it better to make 3.1 with incremental raises ever couple of years at a place with every advantage where you can stay for 10 or 15 years with success, or make 4mm somewhere with the odds stacked heavily against your success?

    10 years from now, the odds favor there being a whole lot more Benjamins in his pockets if he's still at A&M than if he's bounced around. If he does well, he'll more than make up for the temporary shortcoming.

    It was one good season. Another good season... Bump it up again.

    It's people like you who probably want to give Fran and Sherman a raise after a good season.

    If someone comes calling, and we don't want to lose him, you really don't think Sumlin wouldn't give us the chance to match?

    Why let it come to him giving us a chance to match? He's our most valuable asset. It's just a poor contract on our part IMO. $6.1MM buyout for us, $2MM for him. 2 Years from now his buyout will be $1.2. That wouldn't deter anyone from starting a bidding war.

    For comparison, look at Charlie Strong's contract. 8 years, $3.7MM per, a $5MM buyout, and he gets a million dollar annuity and $1.25MM bonus if he's still Louisville's HC in June of 2015. Granted, UL threw the kitchen sink at Strong, but is Sumlin not worth more than Strong?

    I agree we'll continue to bump him with more success, just don't think we were as competitive as we could have been considering how great a coach we think he is. But please, man- don't compare this situation to Fran or Sherm. I knew zero people who agreed with either of those raises.

  • I think Sumlin did a hell of a job last year; but it was one year. He's not leaving and we'll have a chance to give him another raise if he does good again this year

  • Very fair salary, if he wants more, he just needs to keep winning including an SEC Championship and/or a National Championship. Instead of being at the bottom of the salary scale in the SEC, he is near the top.

    I find it interesting that you're arguing against the concessions both parties made in negotiations (at it's core, for Sumlin's camp: less annual salary for more flexibility; the inverse for A&M).

    Just as importantly, our assistant coaching pool got a 700k bump to 3.4 million, I believe. Which I think puts us top 10 in the country for total assistant salaries.

    None of us know exactly what Sumlin's objectives were. Yes, he accepted the terms, but I think it's fair to assume that he would have accepted a higher buyout if we had given a higher salary.

    I do love the ~$700k bump in the assistant coaches' salary pool, but was that mutually exclusive to paying our HC $3.8? Maybe. No way to know without having all our financial statements in front of us
