Team Rankings Compilation

  • Saw discussion on this on a different thread so I quickly compiled a list of rankings for 247's top 10 teams and compared them to Scout, Rivals, ESPN rankings. Some general observations with statistical analysis is that Michigan is dominating, so is Bama but Scout hates them. Every school bounces around quite a bit, especially Notre Dame, LSU, and USCal. Clear bias for tu on ESPN. Basically it's a dartboard, especially this early in the cycle.

    Alabama
    247: 1
    Scout: 6
    Rivals: 2
    ESPN: 3

    Michigan
    247: 2
    Scout: 1
    Rivals: 1
    ESPN: 1

    LSU
    247: 3
    Scout: 11
    Rivals: 4
    ESPN: 15

    Notre Dame
    247: 4
    Scout: 3
    Rivals: 10
    ESPN: 10

    Florida
    247: 5
    Scout: 7
    Rivals: 5
    ESPN: 2

    Georgia
    247: 6
    Scout: 9
    Rivals: 7
    ESPN: 5

    Texas A&M
    247: 7
    Scout: 2
    Rivals: 3
    ESPN: 6

    Texas
    247: 8
    Scout: 8
    Rivals: 8
    ESPN: 4

    Ohio State
    247: 9
    Scout: 5
    Rivals: 9
    ESPN: 7

    South Carolina
    247: 10
    Scout: 16
    Rivals: 11
    ESPN: 16

    USCal
    247: 14
    Scout: 4
    Rivals: 6
    ESPN: 8

  • I laugh when I see ESPN's rating of Texas... I know it really doesn't mean anything but that's just humor at its finest.

  • Lol @ 247 having USCal at 14.

    Unbelievable.

  • Our rankings are based on a mathematical formula, not a bunch of people sitting in a room debating which class is better. While USC has by far the highest average prospect committed, their class only has 11 players in it, well below what most of the country has right now. You can disagree with the formula, but it's not like they just dropped USC for no reason.

I get that Aubs but 14? Come on.

  • I mean, you can't juke the formula, it is what it is.

  • I know you're not responsible for the rankings but why can't you admit that they are fuggin terrible?

    Hugh Honey

  • I think the way we do the team rankings is a good way. USC's class may have tremendous star power, but if they only sign 12 players it isn't a top ten class.

  • 3 five stars and 8 four stars are better than 3 four stars and 18 three stars.

    The formula is shit.

A team that took classes of 15 every year where all 15 were 4 or 5 stars would donkey stomp a team that took classes of 25 3-stars every year.

But think of all the depth those 25 player classes would create.

True, but how rare is it that a team takes a really small class (15 or fewer) with that kind of success? It's hard to build an objective rankings system around a rare anomaly. You could lower the number of players that factor into the rankings but at that point you'd basically be ranking the top ten players in each team's class instead of the top 20 or so that most schools sign. I agree that there's little debate that USC's class is much better than it's ranked, but it'd be next to impossible to build that into a formulaic system and still keep that system viable for the rest of the country.

  • Haha so essentially what Aubrey is saying is that its all about quantity, not quality. Sounds like a shitty formula to me. 247 is thinking a little too hard on this one.

I think he's saying it's basically a points system for your 20 best recruits. That way you don't get #1 class just because you take 30 guys. Maybe a weighted average or something.

Maybe posting's just not your game. I know, let's have a spelling contest.

You should go to the team rankings page and read the formula, that's not what I'm saying at all. In fact, quality is heavily rated in the formula. But the formula is based on ranking an entire class. Right now USC has 11 commits, and while those 11 may be better than any else's 11, it's three fewer commits than anybody in front of them has, and five fewer than anybody in the top five has.

Oh ok. I see what your saying. Can't say I've ever heard of anything like this before. If done correctly I guess it could be efficient.
