The Eagle Editorial on Byrne

  • Absolutely terrible. How anyone can defend Bill Byrne is beyond me.

Dude was responsible for giving both Dennis Francione and Mike Sherman contract extensions all while majorly under-funding the sports that matter. Then in his free time, he would publicly belittle the Ags.

I know the mods are BFF's with David Harris but the dude is horrible.

  • Just as a point of order, I'm not sure that Harris contributed to that article.

  • Byrne was good overall for A&M athletics. Sorry if you can't see that. He wasn't good enough, IMO, because he messed up with football, but solid nonetheless.

  • Come on Bloom, you know he did. He sure was quick to tweet it.

Harris knew it was a flaming turd too, that's why it says Eagle Editorial Board instead of his name.

No, he wasn't. This school revolves around one thing athletically, football. That's it.

We were 58-54 in the ten years he was AD. 58 and 54. He may not have hired them but he gave both of those turds extensions.

But hey, how bout that Equestrian squad!

  • Hugh -- I had nothing to do with the Editorial. I'm a first year writer. Those decisions are made way above me. However, I tweeted it because I agree with a lot that is written in there. If you know me, you'd know I don't need to "hide" behind anything.

  • Please define Bill Byrne's rich legacy. I think we have different definitions of the word rich.

  • Hugh obviously hates Byrne, why even respond?

Objectively, anyone that looks at Byrnes tenure in comparison to any of our past ADs would say that he's done a good job. He could have done a lot better with football, but we are relevant in every sport that we compete in and we are coming off our most profitable year ever!

Your personal disdain for Byrne is apparent, but now it's time to move on.

  • He obviously sucked at contracts

but Byrne improved the football facilities by far

I get that but some of y'all act like we had to have one or the other in an AD.

Improve facilities and sports that don't matter or be good at football.

A competent AD can do both. He funded football and men's basketball like they aren't the money makers. It blows my mind.

    Hugh Honey

  • Agree. BCG and Turgeon were fantastic hires, but like I've said he's under-funded the sport big time.

Our coaches are traveling all over the country sitting in stand-by waiting for a seat in coach to open up. This has happened to Cyp three or four times in the past few months and he was on a plane that had to make an emergency landing.

How our football coaches and hoops coaches don't have access to much more efficient travel for recruiting purposes is mind blowing.

    Hugh Honey

  • Yeah Byrne elevated the University's athletic department in areas of secondary and tertiary importance, but comparing him to our past athletic directors is a very low standard. I'm of the belief that Texas A&M can hire someone that can successfully raise funds for capital expenditures while running a competitive football program

I tend to agree with this. Byrne was far from perfect, but he raised the overall level of our athletic program.

He hired - BCG, Blair and Pat Henry, all home runs, along with several other coaches which were at least decent.

I excuse the Fran extension because I believe there was interest in him at that time. Hindsight just shows it to be a bad decision.

Obviously Sherman was a mistake and he never gave football the proper resources.

I'm not necessarily sad to see him go, but I don't see how anyone could cconsider his tenure a failure.

  • 58-54. How is that not a failure?

He was good at talent evaluation(coaching) sans football?
