The Fri. Debate: Mike Slive Edition

Totally agree I think markets are way overblown in this, particularly with the SEC. The product on the field has made the SEC what it is. Almost none of our schools are in major markets, but tend to do very well. The Tuscaloosa market isn't very large, yet Alabama is a recognized nationwide. I think the SEC goes for a team that is a fit on the field as well as culturally. Geography will play a part too.

I really don't think the SEC is interested in A&M because of its markets (although it certainly doesn't hurt). They like A&M because of its passionate fanbase, production, and recruiting potential.

I disagree. The fact that A&M is in a supreme tv market is the primary reason that the SEC is interested. Transpose A&M with OSU in Stillwater and you'll get next to no interest. The state of OK brings comparatively nothing demographically.

I've read that adding A&M and the Texas market will increase the SEC viewing area by 42%, which triggers a new SEC tv contract agreement that will result in a significant increase.

Not dismissing that A&M's passionate fanbase and unique tradtions certainly added to their appeal, as well as their facilities, location and ability to compete. Those all played significant factors as well. But its money, specifically tv money, that is driving this bus.

Markets certainly play a huge part. I think it puts A&M over the top so to speak. For instance if Texas Tech was in college station, I don't think they would be a take for the SEC. I guess what I really meant to say was this will not only be based on TV, any school must have the total package.

  • anyone who thinks UNC would leave the ACC is a moron. UNC runs the ACC office, ACC Commissioner is a UNC alum and they pride themselves on academics and their tobacco road tradition. VT can't leave without UVA. Virginia legislature forced UVA to make sure VT was accepted into the ACC. There is no way UVA and their powerful alums in the VA legislature to allow VT to leave without them.

You guys worry about markets but fail to consider the political issues involved. TV ratings are more important than new markets. If markets were the issue every conference would be beating down Rutger's or some NYC's school.

Agreed. That's why I think WV is the most obvious SEC choice from the east. They have similar qualities as A&M, and can bring in TV markets in DC and Pittsburg.

I don't think too many around the SEC would oppose bringing in UVA as well as Va. Tech around the SEC if it were to go to 16. It is a better combo than the Oklahoma package of schools as far as cultural fit and bringing new viewership. Assume A&M, that leaves one more of the many teams discussed on here.
