I think it may be bit worse. At least in Texas you have the option to be affiliate with a professional team. I'm pretty sure that Auburn does;t have many t-shirt fans unless they were Cam Newton fans.
Living in bama now. It's way worse here. They have no pro sports. College fball is all they have. Just listen to the Feinbaum show, and you'll see what I'm talking about.
